The next time you’re in Melbourne, don’t forget to keep an eye out for some of these scenic spots which were featured in The Dream Makers 2, during the Channel 8 drama’s shoot Down Under. Whether you’re in the city or at the suburbs, it’d be hard to miss out on these locations!

Special thanks to Tourism Australia and Tourism Victoria.

#1 Federation Square

Remember the bench scene which showed Zhong Yiming (Romeo Tan) trying to get more juicy information from Zhao Fei’er (Jeanette Aw) about her past relationship with Jason Lam (Qi Yuwu)? The VBS team had to film an interview for an upcoming variety special for the nuptials of Fang Tonglin (Rui En) and Jason at the Melbourne Park located behind Federation Square.

In the background lies the Yarra River, which runs through the heart of Melbourne’s CBD (central business district) area.

#2 Flinders Street Station

Loved for its antiquated look and exterior, the Flinders Street Station (which is just across the street from Federation Square) was one of the many backdrops featured in Tonglin and Jason’s wedding photoshoot in the city.

Other iconic spots where the couple had their “wedding photos” taken include the artsy fartsy Hosier Lane, Brighton Beach bathing boxes and Degraves St Café.

PS: Another lovely photo spot with the backdrop of the CBD area would be the Yarra Promenade that is a five-minute walk away from the back of the Flinders Street Station.

#3 Hosier Lane

A short fleeting scene which featured Zhou Weiyun (Zoe Tay) searching high and low for Yiming was filmed at one of the hippest streets in Melbourne known for its graffiti artworks – Hosier Lane.

Recognise this scene? It’s one of the MV (music video) shots taken of Yiming protecting and trailing behind a despondent Fei’er during their time in Melbourne.

#4 Mart café at Middle Park Station

Hipsters on the search of the next #ootd or coffee-hopping spot should give Mart café, a tiny but cosy café situated in a tram station, a go. Sip on a freshly brewed cup of java and tram-watch the afternoon away – just don’t whip out your tablet and start working like Weiyun did in the drama.

#5 South Melbourne Market

Remember when Yiming whisked Fei’er to Melbourne to escape the media attention after her kissing footage with Jason was leaked at the wedding ceremony? The duo’s scenes filmed at the South Melbourne Market may have felt a little somber and mellow, but it was nothing like that on set, when the cameras weren’t rolling.

The cast even had time to indulge in some briny oysters courtesy of Jeanette! Guess who had time to indulge in a spot of shopping at the market because she had no scenes to film that morning? (Answer in the video)

#6 Brighton beach

Brighton beach may be the perfect place to frolic in the sea, sun and sand and while scenes of such nature were not featured in the drama series, its colourful bathing boxes had plenty of screentime on TV. It was one of the photo spots for the wedding shoot and it was also where Weiyun filmed a considerably high-tech scene with an inebriated Yiming using a green backdrop.

The boxes are such an iconic tourist landmark of Melbourne that even Jeanette couldn’t resist taking a shot or two – even though she had no scenes to film at the beach. Don’t you love how the paddle pop colours on this box are a big contrast from her character’s moody vibes?

#7 St Kilda’s Pier

Yiming and Fei’er were filmed shopping along the flea market at St Kilda’s Pier and it was not just for show. Romeo picked up a couple of buys after perusing the stalls for work and brought home two artworks and some clothing for his niece. PS: Ah Wu picked up a few pieces of clothing for his daughter at the flea market too - so who knows what good buys you might find there?

Other than the shopping scene, St Kilda’s Pier was a location that was also used for Tonglin and Jason’s wedding shoot at the entrance of Luna Park at magic hour.

#8 Train Trak winery at Yarra Valley

If you have time to drive out of the city and head to Yarra Valley where a portion of the drama’s scenes was filmed it, you might be keen to check out the Train Trak winery. Do you recognise this setting from some shots used in the MV for the theme song by Kit Chan and as the backdrop of the home of Jason’s parents? After filming wrapped, Romeo did an impromptu mini-photoshoot with his co-stars at the picturesque background which featured endless rows of vineyards.

PS: If you’re in the area, check out Italian restaurant Zonzo for some good pizza too!

#9 Alfred Nicholas Garden

Remember the scene of Fei’er playing heroine when she walked into the pond to retrieve Yiming’s dropped phone? This tranquil garden is an ideal photo spot for wedding pictures with its lush greenery (think: Twilight) and looks absolutely lovely in fall with the change of seasons and leaf colours. And yes, there’s really a little wooden hut (the one where Fei’er and Yiming took shelter for a night in the drama) down the road!

Mark these dates down if you’re keen to check out the tulip farm (located at the Yarra Valley) during your visit this year: September 8th to October 4th. This seasonal festival is not just about the flowers, there are live performances, including a mini food and games fair, located at the outskirts of the farm for the full “Dutch” experience!
