You won’t get bored just running

Every weekend there will be some sort of marathon or run for the masses. After a while, try something different from the usual and do an obstacle course race (OCR) instead. You still get to run for quite a substantial distance as you have to run between obstacles, but you also get the thrill of completing different types of challenges.

When you run, you’re mostly working out your legs. In OCR, however, the various challenges will put your entire body to the test. For example, in the Spartan Race, you will need a lot of arm strength in the rope climb and the monkey bars. You will also be doing a lot of burpees if you cannot complete any of the obstacles.

You develop your body functionally

When you train for OCR, you are pretty much doing training for all parts of the body from the arms to the shoulders, core, butt and legs. You have to learn to clear these obstacles with your own ability and not rely on machines. That way, your body becomes more functional and more applicable to your everyday tasks.

You will never see burpees the same way

Specific to the Spartan Race, you will have to finish 30 burpees for every obstacle you fail. That can add up to a lot if you don’t clear all obstacles. Burpees can be very tiring and you will be doing so many of it during training that you might end up liking it more or hating it. Alternatively, train harder as an all-rounded athlete and complete all obstacles without failing.

You are not allowed to give up

There is no escape route. You cannot just walk away if you are unable to finish an obstacle. At the Spartan Race, you will have to finish burpees. Then there is also the community which will support you every step of the way and cheer you on. Friends, or people around you, are allowed to help you complete the obstacle, so there really is no excuse to give up.

You discover new things about yourself

You might have gone into an OCR thinking you may not come out alive. However, once you hit the finish line, you will be amazed at yourself and how you went through all the obstacles. You push your limits further and realise how much potential you actually have.

You get to do things you normally wouldn’t
How often do you get to flip a tyre, throw a spear, scale walls or climb under barbed wire? Think of it as a jungle survivor course of some sort – you never know when these skills will come in handy.
