Fun fitness alternatives for the new year

The year-end festivities have come to an end, and it’s time to get off our butts. Getting back on the gym’s treadmill? Boring… For those who want to have fun while keeping fit, here are some engaging alternative workouts you can try.

Willpower & Grace

Where: Momentum Lab, #01-15, 354 Alexandra Road, 6339-2210, www.momentumlab.sg

What: Sure, working out barefoot is nothing new, but few of those workouts actually focus on improving foot fitness quite like Willpower & Grace. It’s essentially an energetic, full-body functional workout, but during the class, the instructor will continually bring your awareness to how your feet and ankles are working in tandem with your whole body. Do we really need “fit” feet? Well, yes. Stronger feet will stabilise knee and hip joints, and help you develop a stronger core, essential for sports such as running and tennis.

How Much: $35 for a trial class

Faux Surfing

Where: Surfset Singapore, 454B Joo Chiat Road, 9751-0793, www.surfset.sg

What: We might not have 20-foot waves at our disposal, but that doesn’t mean we can’t reap the benefits of a surfer’s workout. Introducing Surfset, a programme where you’re tasked to do a series of exercises on a “surfboard”. These include paddling, duck-diving, and “popping up” onto the board. Expect a challenging full-body workout that will not just help you get taut and toned, but also improve your cardiovascular fitness, core strength and balance.

What: It may be a hit among kids but, trust us; it’s far from child’s play. Regular 30-minute trampoline workouts are touted to significantly improve cardiovascular fitness in both trained athletes and sedentary people alike. Your legs will also become significantly stronger, and you’ll also notice improved balance, core strength, as well as better performance in sports that require multi-directional movement. Plus, it’s so much fun that you’ll hardly feel like you’re working out at all.

Bollywood Dancing

Where: Bollywood Dancing Studio, #01-12 Waterloo Centre, 9062-1412, www.bollydancing.com.sg

What: Not just about dancing around a tree, modern Bollywood dancing is a fusion of Bhangra, a traditional Indian folk dance, and similarly high-energy contemporary dances like hip-hop and Latin dance. Bollywood dancing involves a lot of quick moments making it a great cardio workout for fat-burning. It also boosts your body’s natural balance and rhythm, tones your muscles (without bulking you up) and is a helluva lot of fun — making it the perfect way to de-stress after a long day.
