Pixar’s Inside Out

If you watched Pixar’s latest hit Inside Out and came away thinking there are only five basic emotions — joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger — you’re wrong. Studies show that there are more primary emotions that inhabit the human mind, though there isn’t a consensus on just how many there are (it ranges from six to 15). Some of the emotions that were cut out from the movie: surprise, anticipation, pride and trust. We decided to give some of these eliminated emotions their 15 seconds of fame anyway, and since Amy Poeler & gang weren’t available, we got celebrity Jeffrey Xu to help illustrate them.

Irritation

“I get very easily irritated over trivial issues. A make-up artist did a bad job drawing my eyebrows but ’cos I’m an artiste, I can’t show my displeasure. I also get pissed if a colleague’s disrespectful. When I was filming my first show, I heard a cameraman say to his assistant, ‘Why are you so polite to him? He’s not even an Ah Ge!’ I was quite sad.”

Shyness

“I get shy very easily, like when girls make the first move on me. That happens to me a lot! Sometimes, my female friends will touch me or hook their arm around mine, or cosy up when we’re taking a photo. I’m not against it, but I prefer girls who are a bit more reserved.”

Depression

“I had depression when I first came to Singapore. I wasn’t famous and was snubbed by everyone. My manager tried pushing me but no magazine wanted to interview me or take my photos. I had no work ’cos no one wanted to cast me. I would hound my manager every day to ask if I had any work lined up. She was afraid that I’d be unhappy so she didn’t dare tell me the truth. But I knew and was very hurt. Once, I even cried without knowing why.”

Emotion he’d like to play: Joy

“When I won an award at the Asian Television Awards, I realised how wonderful life is! Everyone was asking me out and congratulating me. I was very happy. I care a lot about whether people know who I am. Among the 8 Dukes, my progress has been the slowest. I hope people will take notice of me and stop neglecting me. I’m very scared of being alone and people being indifferent towards me.”
