How have you been training specifically for the race?

"A lot of people have asked me if just going to the gym will be enough to train for the race. It’s definitely better than sitting around doing nothing, but aside from pure physical strength, I think agility is also a key part of the Spartan Race. Certain obstacles like the Herculean Hoist will require physical strength to a certain extent, so as long as you can do at least 10 push ups, you’ll be pretty safe. But because there’s also a 6km run on top of stopping for the obstacles, it’s different from just running or going to the gym. It’s all mixed together, so you have to mix it up for your training routine as well. During your training regime, make sure you run a few kilometres, then do 30 burpees, and repeat that three times — you’ll get an idea of how you’ll perform in the Spartan Race."

"I have never taken part in any marathon before, so I thought this would be a good chance to challenge myself and to find out how fit I really am. I also think Spartan is a great platform for me to try this out — it’s known to be tough, but I’m up for the challenge."

How many burpees do you think you’ll be doing?

"Hopefully I can complete every obstacle so I don’t have to do a single burpee, but from what I understand, if you fail to complete an obstacle, you need to do 30 burpees. If you fail every obstacle, that’s 660 burpees. That’s the worst-case scenario, but I think that’s still doable for me!"

"I think it’s going to be the vertical rope climb because I’ve never tried that before. I know you’re supposed to do that in the army, but I had a back injury then and was in a lower PES, so I’ve never tried it before. Looks like the Spartan Race is going to be a lot of “firsts” for me."

Which song should soundtrack your journey on race day?
"Jungle by X Ambassadors — I always listen to this when I’m working out to get me pumped."
