Dehydration results in cramping, stresses your internal organs and makes you to feel “out of it”, all raising the risk of injury. Replenish your fluid regularly during gym time — but don’t walk back and forth to the water dispenser. This only distracts you from your workout and gives your body too much time to cool off (if you’re working on a cardio routine). Tip: Bring a water bottle along and keep it next to you.

Work out non-stop without taking a break

Take some time off from the gym every once in a while. Rest days are important periods for the body to repair itself and build new muscles. If you feel tired after a workout, you probably need a rest. Working out should make you feel energised and healthier. If you’re not feeling this way, it’s your body’s way of saying you’re pushing too hard.

Skip a meal before exercising

Many people don’t eat before a workout thinking that without “fuel" in their stomachs, they’ll burn up extra body fat instead. This is a big mistake. With less energy for your body to work with, you’re more likely to feel dizzy, exercise less and give up early because you feel tired.

Become restless

Perform the same routine for too long or do too many exercises you secretly hate are common culprits that lead to boredom. Get out of the exercise slump and shake things up by: 1) Varying your routines (it also gets you to exercise different muscles not used in previous workouts) 2) Finding a new gym partner 3) Listening to new workout music 4) Joining a class offered by your gym 5) Joining Spartan Race — you’ll stay motivated as you train for the race. And you can rest assured you’ll not be bored on race day.

The Reebok Spartan Race Singapore happens 15 Nov. To register, visit spartanrace.sg.
