With all the time we spend at work, workplace romances are bound to happen. So where should you draw the line and should you keep it a secret? That depends on the culture of your workplace, but no matter how liberal your company is, there are some general rules office couples should always follow.

And who better to learn from than Korean superstars Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki (who will be coming to Singapore on 8 August to promote his new movie The Battleship Island)? Despite their popularity, their working on the same jobs together and the similar circles they move in, they’ve always managed to keep things classy. Read on to find out how to do the same.

1. Keep your relationship separate from work

For starters, keeping your relationship separate from work will help you avoid conflicts of interest. If you are involved with someone who reports to you or vice versa, you might want to try to change your reporting line.

Alternatively, you can start dating after one of you has left the company. In a broader sense, that’s what the two Songs did - they only started dating after filming had wrapped.

Though the #SongSongCouple met on the set while filming the popular KBS drama Descendants of the Sun (DOTS) in late May 2015, they reportedly only pursued a relationship with each other in January 2016 after filming was over. According to media outlet Osen, who spoke to an acquaintance of the two actors, their love started before the drama official aired on 24 February 2016.

The couple exuded undeniable onscreen chemistry when they starred opposite each other in DOTS and in her note to fans, Song Hye Kyo said she felt she and her co-star had similar values, and they stayed in contact as close colleagues and friends after the project was finished.

You might want to keep things quiet early on until you both know where the relationship is going.

Until their surprise wedding announcement earlier this month, fans could speculate about the Songs’ real-life romance. Even though rumours of the two dating surfaced when netizens claimed to have spotted them together shopping and dining in New York, the claims were denied by both parties.

It’s ultimately up to you when you want to share the news, especially if it is going to be a long-term union. The Songs didn’t just come clean about their romance, they sprung a surprise and announced their plans to wed on 31 October 2017.

3. Don't let it affect your work

In productivity-driven workplaces, there’s no room for distraction and office romances can be a big one. You have to be able to show management how this won’t influence your actions and decisions.

In a letter to fans, Song Joong Ki said he had not been able to reveal his marriage plans sooner out of respect for his family. According to Yonhap News Agency, he also said that he did not want to “cause any harm” to his upcoming film, The Battleship Island.

4. Know who to trust

You’ll probably want to tell your close friends and that’s perfectly fine.

The #SongSongCouple didn’t make an effort to hide their relationship from friends. An acquaintance reportedly shared that “Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo didn’t really try to hide their relationship from the people around them. They first told people they trusted, and if someone else asked about it, they neither affirmed nor denied.”

But if you’re not going to out your relationship, you should make sure that the person you tell isn’t going to do that either. Just a few days ago, actress Lee Jung Hyun revealed she knew about the couple’s engagement, which actually happened at the beginning of 2017. But she only came forward after the announcement was made.

However, before the announcement, South Korean broadcasting company MBC aired coverage on the couple’s trip to Bali that sparked dating rumours. Pictures from Song’s private Instagram account were allegedly leaked by a personal friend of hers fuelling speculation that the two had travelled to Bali together. We think someone just got his wedding invite cancelled.

Make your decisions together – to tell or not to tell. Go over the ground rules together so both of you have the same message.

It was revealed that the actors didn’t want their dating news to be reported by the media as they wanted to be the first ones to share the news of their relationship with their fans. They chose to share the happy news on 4 July much to the delight of their fans.
