K-hair is all the rage

A true K-pop fan will know that whenever his/her favourite idol starts donning caps and covering up, you know a new album or project is near. And with that comes a whole new look, which usually involves a change in hairstyle and colour.

In fact, some K-pop idols change their hair colours so often that it makes it hard for even fans to keep up - case in point, BTS’ Jimin who went from blonde (seen at the Golden Disc Awards 2019 in early January) to pink-peach (seen at the group’s mid-Jan concert in Nagoya, Japan) and now pink-purple (seen at Seoul Music Awards 2019 just two days after their concert) in a span of less than a month.

So if you’re looking to update your style, why not get some inspo from your favourite K-pop stars?

Wavy Lob

Inspiration: Jihyo from Twice; Tiffany from Girls' Generation
Twice fans were in for a surprise when the group’s leader, Jihyo, lopped off her long tresses for the music video of their hit 'Yes or Yes'. But the shorter style gave her a fresh and sunny vibe, perfect for her personality. And what we like best is that she didn’t keep the lob (long bob) poker straight, opting for tousled waves for a more feminine vibe. Alternatively, try a blunt cut with a fringe, yet still keeping the look soft with subtle waves like Girls' Generation’s Tiffany.

Get The Look: OUAI Wave Spray, $39
Enhance hair’s natural waves with this lightweight texturising mist. It contains Rice Protein to help hold waves in place without leaving hair looking and feeling dry, and can be used on dry or damp, freshly washed hair.

Blonde Bob

Blonde Bob

Inspiration: Wheein from MAMAMOO; LE from EXID
Because going blonde requires bleaching the hair, which can be damaging, so keep the style short to minimise the damage. Try a blunt cut to frame the face or add choppy bangs, like EXID’s LE, for a fierce attitude that will make people sit up and take notice.

Get The Look: Verb Ghost Oil, $24
Bleaching the hair often results in hair getting really dry and damaged as the chemicals strip the natural colour from your hair. And depending on how light you go, it can involve a few rounds of bleaching. Repair and hydrate hair with this lightweight oil-serum and its blend of Moringa oil, Bamboo extract, Vitamin F and Soy Proteins.

Curls and Bangs

Inspiration: Yuqi from (G)I-dle
Who said that curls and bangs don’t go? We love the combination of curls and wispy bangs as they make for a Lolita-like appearance. The best bit? Regardless of hair colour - as seen on (G)I-dle’s Chinese member Yuqi who rocks the look in a variety of hair tones from black and brown to blonde and copper - this is a pairing that works.

Get The Look: Vernon Francois Curl-Command Moisture Spray, $40
The key to this look is ensuring that curls look soft yet defined. This detangling spray is infused with Baobab Oil and Panthenol to hydrate and repair, yet doesn’t weigh the hair down, leaving curls looking bouncier and frizz-free.

Bambi Brown

Inspiration: Daisy from Momoland; Mina from Gugudan; Eunbin from CLC
Dubbed by Korean hair salon Cha Hong Academy to be the colour for 2019, the inspiration for this comes from the Disney character it takes its name from. A light brown with red undertones, it’s suitable for most skin tones with its youthful vibe.

Get The Look: Bare For Bare Rose & Kerarice Colour Protection Shampoo and Conditioner, $25.90 each
After any dye job, hair often feels dry and unmanageable. Infused with Kerarice and Rose extracts, this shampoo and conditioner duo not only strengthens hair from within while repairing chemical damage, but also prevents colour from fading so your newly coloured tresses look shiny and healthy.

Grown-Up Ombre

Grown-Up Ombre

Inspiration: Bomi from Apink; Yeri from Red Velvet
While most ombre styles involve cascading waves, these idols give this look an elegant, updated spin by keeping hair sleek and straight. The contrasting colours might look almost block-ish, but it gives an edgy finish to the style. Just don’t forget to find the right ratio - two-thirds for the main and one-third for the lighter shade - between the colours.

Get The Look: Living Proof Restore Perfecting Spray, $39
If you’re looking to channel your favourite K-pop celebs with this look, then poker straight tresses is key. This lightweight spray not only hydrates and detangles to keep hair soft and smooth, but also strengthens and protects it from heat-damaging styling tools, like hairdryers and flat-irons, which are an important part in achieving this look.

Wispy Bangs

Inspiration: Chunga, Yerin and Yuju from GFriend; Soobin and Bona from WJSN
Lighten a heavy style with wispy bangs, just like these girls. And it doesn’t matter what your hair colour might be - black, brown or even orange, wispy bangs instantly take years off.

Get The Look: Botanist Botanical Hair Milk (Moist), $24
You don’t want to weigh the bangs down because flat and limp hair can look greasy. So instead of an oil-based serum, use a water-based hair mist to keep frizz and fly-away at bay. Enriched with botanical extracts, this water-based treatment hydrates dry locks, tames frizz and even protects against heated styling tools. And because it’s so lightweight, you can spritz it throughout the day whenever hair feels dry and frizzy, and it won’t weigh fine tresses down.

Blue Hue

Inspiration: Amber Liu from F(x), V from BTS and E’dawn
There’s no better way to turn heads than with a bold colour like these K-celebs. You can either go all out and get a full head of the vibrant cerulean shade like the boys or keep it edgy with a mix blue and black like spunky Amber.

Get The Look: Innisfree Camellia Essential Hair Mask Pack, $8
Because bleaching the hair will often be required to achieve this bright shade, it is important to keep hair nourished and hydrated after your dye job. Enriched with nourishing Jeju Camellia Oil, it repairs damage to keep tresses sleek and smooth while helping to maintain the balance of oil and moisture on both the scalp and hair at the same time. But what we also love is that this easy-to-use hair mask means no more fiddling with tubs and tubes while in the shower.

Pink Top

Inspiration: Jimin from BTS, Jin Jin and Moonbin from Astro
The perfect colour for spring, these idols are keeping things light and airy with their cotton-candy tresses. After all, doesn’t this pretty colour remind you of flowers blooming and the arrival of a new season?

Get The Look: Aprilskin Turn Up Color Treatment in Pink and Peach Pink, $13 each
As pink hues tend to fade easily, keep your colour looking fresh by topping it up with this easy-to-use hair tint. While it only lasts up to two weeks (or 12 washes), it will help prolong your dye job till you absolutely have to head into the salon for a proper touch-up. Best bit? It also contains Rosemary, Lavender and Sage extracts together with Jojoba Seed Oil to nourish hair, leaving it soft and silky-smooth.

Silver 2.0

Inspiration: Ha Sungwoon from Wanna One/Hotshot; Kai from EXO; Lisa from Blackpink
This cool hue is still a popular colour to try if you’re looking to change your look in 2019. But instead of silver-grey of 2017 and 2018, keep it brighter like Wanna One’s Sungwoon with his silver-blue gloss. But if full-on silver is not your thing, try mixing it with brown or even blue and green tones, a la Blackpink’s Lisa and EXO’s Kai, which is subtle yet still interesting enough to turn heads, and also gives the illusion of silky, voluminous hair at the same time

Get The Look: IGK Mixed Feelings Leave-In Blonde Toning Drops, $43
Keep your silver tones looking vibrant by adding a blonde toner to each wash. Easy-to-use, just mix a few drops to your favourite leave-in conditioner or hair cream and apply to get rid of the brassiness while keeping hair soft and shiny too.

Duo Tone

Duo Tone

Inspiration: V from BTS
Unlike the ombré look, this is one colour trend that few can pull off as it needs oodles of confidence. For the bold and brave, choose vibrant contrasting hues (I’ve seen a Korean girl with cerulean blue and fuchsia in Seoul), but if you’re shy and yet still want to be adventurous, do what BTS’ V has done by going halfsies with blonde and a soft pink.

Get The Look: Botaneco Garden Organic Chia Seed Oil & Honey Hair Oil, $7.90
With hair that’s been bleached and dyed, hair is often dry (sometimes even feeling straw-like) and damaged. This nourishing serum is enriched with organic Honey extract, Hydrolyzed Protein, Panthenol as well as Crambe Abyssinica Seed and Sesame oils to intensely hydrate locks, repair and protect against further damage caused by UV and heat at the same time.
