Longwear lipsticks: The better to kiss you with!

Channel your best Fall/Winter 2018 beauty look with a matte lip. Wear it bold and defined for a stunning pout or blend with your fingertip for a soft stain - whichever finish you choose, it is the easiest way to dress your look this season. But how do they fare in terms of staying power? We tested seven matte lipsticks to see which went the distance. Here’s our verdict:

Chanel Rouge Allure Liquid Powder, $50

Chanel Rouge Allure Liquid Powder, $50

Comes in: Six shades

We love: The most lightweight of the lot, this felt like nothing on our lips. In fact, we had to double and triple check that we had even applied it in the first place. The sponge-tip applicator wasn’t the most effective for achieving a precise lip finish, but it helps with an even colour application.

Survival power: Made it through a salad lunch and left behind a light hint of colour. But by tea-time, we needed a touch-up because the colour was barely visible.

Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint, $36

Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint, $36

Comes in: Five shades

We love: The lightweight formula dries really fast, so application needs to be quick if you’re looking for a stain instead of a full pigmented colour.

Survival power: Really long-lasting, it made it through dinner at Fat Duck and we even had to use a waterproof makeup remover to clean away the last traces at the end of the night.

Innisfree Vivid Cotton Tint, $15

Innisfree Vivid Cotton Tint, $15

Comes in: Five shades

We love: Dubbed “MLBB” (My Lips But Better) colours, each shade suits a variety of skin tones, making it really easy to wear and something that you can keep in your makeup pouch for daily wear.

Survival power: Pretty impressive as it made it through a Korean BBQ dinner and a night of snacking and drinking at karaoke after.

Laneige Tattoo Lip Tint, $32

Laneige Tattoo Lip Tint, $32

Comes in: 10 shades

We love: The applicator makes this really easy to get a precise lip definition, similar to using a lip brush.

Survival power: Was not as long-lasting as the others, the colour had completely disappeared after our lunch at Man Man.

Mamonde Highlight Lip Tint, $18

Mamonde Highlight Lip Tint, $18

Comes in: Five shades

We love: Application-wise, it was not the smoothest, so we ended up using our fingers to blend and blur the colour into a stain-like finish. It has a subtle rose scent (it actually reminded us of the old-school Bandung drink), which was an interesting change from the usual lipstick scent.

Surival power: It lasted through tea with friends and dinner too, and had to be removed with a waterproof makeup remover at the end of the night to clean away the last traces.

Shu Uemura Matte Supreme, $43
Shu Uemura Matte Supreme, $43
13 Nov 2018

Shu Uemura Matte Supreme, $43

Comes in: 15 shades

We love: The applicator holds quite a lot of product, so applying can be tricky if you’re trying to be extremely precise. The formula is a little drying on the lips, so applying a lip balm beforehand will be good if you’ve got dry lips.

Survival power: It stayed put and did not budge for a good five hours, but did not make it through a fried chicken dinner.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture The Slim, $54

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture The Slim, $54

Comes in: 25 shades

We love: The unique square tip - instead of the usual rounded bullet, really helps define the lips during application, which is great for achieving that perfect lip finish, especially when using bold and bright colours like red and fuchsia.

Survival power: Made it through a Chinese dinner with friends with a stain of colour left.
