To many Korean celebrities, cleansing is the most important step in their skincare routine. Long hours of wearing makeup during filming or concerts can wreak havoc on their complexions. Cleansing not only removes makeup but also dirt and impurities that can leave skin looking dull. In fact, Red Velvet’s Wendy has said that thoroughly cleansing her skin after wearing makeup the whole day is one of the key factors that contributes to how bright and clear her complexion is. And Suzy Bae has shared in interviews that she uses a 424 method when it comes to cleansing - four minutes with an oil cleanser, two minutes with a water-based cleanser and four minutes of rinsing it all off thoroughly with water.

Skin rescue: Boost brightening effects with a serum

Celeb fans: Jessica Jung (left), Constance Wu (right) and BlackPink’s Rosé

Often said to have the highest concentration of active ingredients, a serum is chock-a-block full of skin-loving properties to nourish the skin. Most serums are also lightweight in texture, which means layering your skincare products will not overload the skin. To enhance the absorption of her serums, Jessica Jung has shared that using the warmth from the palms of your hands to gently press the serum helps. And of course, follow this with a moisturiser to seal in all the goodness.

To even out the skin tone, erase the appearance of pigmentation and brighten the complexion, brightening serums usually contain vitamin C derivatives that not only even out the skin tone, but also help complexions look youthful and radiant.

Skin rescue: Get bright-eyed with an eye cream

Celeb fans: Zhang Ziyi (left) and Twice’s Nayeon (right)

It’s been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and it is also one of the first places to show signs of ageing as the skin around delicate eye area is much thinner than the rest of the face. In addition, the area undergoes a lot of wear and tear from rubbing, smiling and squinting, which can all lead to fine lines, dryness, wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles.

A good all-in-one eye cream to incorporate into your daily skincare regimen is a brightening one that not only hydrates but also boosts circulation and lightens the appearance of dark under-eye circles to get you looking bright-eyed.

Skin woe: Dry and lacklustre skin

Skin rescue: Hydrate for a lit-from-within glow

Celeb fans: BTS’ V (left), Jungkook and J-Hope, Red Velvet Joy and Blackpink Rosé (right)

A well-hydrated skin is the key to achieving that luminosity that Koreans are well-known for, what we’ve come to know as “glass skin”. This is because when skin is hydrated, it is smooth and supple, and is better able to reflect the light, giving it that dewy glow. This is one crucial step that all Korean idols follow, especially since they not only wear makeup for long hours but also travel constantly, which can cause skin to be out of whack.

Need a radiance boost? A brightening moisturiser not only hydrates the skin but is also able to even out the skin tone, gently reduce the appearance of pigmentation and even old acne blemishes that can mar a clear complexion.

Skin woe: Sallow skin tone

Skin rescue: Even out the skin tone and glow pretty easily

Celeb fans: Ouyang Nana

Most women are still confused about what a tone-up cream is and what it does. In short, tone-up creams blur the line between skincare and makeup, giving the complexion instant radiance, cancelling out the sallowness that can often make you look tired. It’s more skincare than makeup though, so don’t expect any colour coverage. These days, many tone-up creams have hydrating properties so it can also double up as a lightweight moisturiser.

Skin rescue: Apply sunscreen daily

Celeb fans: Fan Bing Bing (left), Sandara Park (right) and Long-boarder Ko Hyojoo

The easiest way to ensure that complexion stays even-toned is with daily application of sunscreen. Without protection, the sun’s harmful UV rays not only causes pigmentation but also premature signs of ageing like lines and rough skin texture. In fact, Fan Bing Bing has been cited to not only use sunscreen but further protects herself by carrying an umbrella or use a wide-brimmed hat when she goes outdoors.

The downside is that many of us often do not wear enough sunscreen daily, so make sure you load up - at least a 50-cent coin worth for the face, in the mornings. And yes, this includes even if you’re just heading into the office or just lounging around at home. In short, never, ever skip your sunscreen.
