A beginner's guide to Pixi Beauty

If you’re a fan of UK beauty brand Pixi Beauty, which became available at Sephora Singapore last year, then you’ll love this piece of news: three new Pixi Beauty skincare items are now available in Sephora stores islandwide and on Sephora online, and Pixi Beauty Makeup is finally available on Sephora’s website.

Obviously, we’re over the moon about no longer having to order these items from overseas, but we’re less happy about the potential damage to our wallets. So we consulted none other than Petra Strand, founder of Pixi, who moved here seven months ago with her family to expand the brand’s presence in Southeast Asia. Adjusting to Singapore’s climate was not easy feat given her upbringing in Sweden and years in London and Los Angeles, but after experiencing the relentless balminess firsthand, Petra knows exactly what Pixi fans need to keep oiliness at bay.

Here’s what she recommended during our interview – which, by the way, took place on a sunny afternoon when it was over 30 degrees out.

Lifestyle problem: Makeup is no match for shiny complexion

Deal with it using: Flawless Beauty Primer, $33

“I’m a makeup artist, but unless you have good skin nothing is going to look good,” Petra says. “So we have a lot of prep and prime products, just to optimise your skin.”

This product, which minimises pores, smooths skin texture, and controls shine should lock in makeup on even the muggiest of days.

Lifestyle problem: The airconditioning is too strong

Deal with it using: Pixi H20 Skindrink, $34

If there’s one thing that surprised Petra as much as the heat did, it’s the strength of our airconditioners. “It’s not just the heat here, actually. It’s going from hot to cold all the time. You need waterproof and oil-free products to make sure everything can stay on, but you’ve also got all the dryness that comes with airconditioning the whole time,” she says. “That wreaks havoc on your skin!”

She recommends the H20 Skindrink, a fast-absorbing cooling gel moisturiser that uses rosemary, aloe vera, and green tea to soothe irritation.

Deal with it using: H20 Skintint, $36

Don’t call it a foundation or even a CC Cream, because this tinted face gel is something completely different. Water-based, water-resistant, and enriched with antioxidant-laden green tea, hydrating rose water, and soothing lavender, this product looks and feels uncannily smooth once applied. Coverage-wise, it’s on the thinner side, so we’d recommend it as an enhancer on days when your complexion looks good to begin with.

What’s more annoying than labouring over your face, only to have everything melt off within a couple of hours? Try the rose water and green tea-infused Makeup Fixing Mist, which not only sets your makeup, but gives you a matte finish – just what we need to keep our glowiness from turning into oiliness.

Deal with it using: Glo Tonic To-Go Exfoliating Pads, $34

Like many residents of Singapore, Petra travels constantly. Her recommendation for the avid jetsetter? Exfoliating pads, which make swiping away dead skin cells a no-brainer. Try using them right before getting off a long flight. You’ll look so good you’ll surprise even yourself.

Lifestyle problem: Skin is dry and patchy

Deal with it using: Rose Ceramide Cream, $35

“You need good skincare that’s exfoliating and balancing, that doesn’t make your skin overproduce oil, but that feeds it at the same time,” Petra says. What could possibly fulfill all of those needs? She recommends the new Rose Ceramide Cream, which “smells good but has no perfume, is all natural, plumps the skin, and retains moisture.” Ceramides help reinforce the skin’s natural moisture barrier after it has been damaged by environmental factors – just what we need after a long day out and about.
