9 beauty trends that were everywhere in 2017… but are now totally passé

Mermaid hair? Man bun? Here are the celeb beauty trends that we need to move on from in 2018

Mermaid hair

There has never been a hair trend so heavily Instagrammed than last year’s mermaid hair craze. It started with a handful of influencers, then suddenly even your 17-year-old niece is spotting My Little Pony-esque locks. As colourful as it made our Instagram feeds look, the mermaid hair trend is set to fade this year as most of these wannabe-mermaids grapple with the issues of badly damaged hair and the cost of having to maintain fast-fading hair colours.

Try instead:
Ashy hair tones, which are now being flaunted by K-pop stars. Not only are they easier to upkeep, you also won’t completely kill your hair trying to achieve it.

Bleached blonde hair

Everything that was bad with mermaid hair? Ditto for the hundreds and thousands of bleached blondes here who now face horrendous split ends, straw-y tresses and unflattering brassy or orangey faded-out hair.

Try instead:
Yup, ash tones for the win in 2018! And look out too for new, ultra-speedy hair colouring services, like the new #FakeAsh Hair Colouring at Chez Vous salon (launching in March) which offers a one-session pre-lightening technique that will wreck less damage.

OTT nail art

Okay honestly, we don’t know if highly elaborate nail art will ever bite the dust, but we are frankly tired of having to take days off work to keep up with this trend.

Try instead:
Chrome and metallic hues are going to be big (again) in 2018, but if you must indulge in nail art, keep it minimalist, like the negative-space manicures that were all over the New York Spring/Summer Fashion Week.

Top knot

Top knot

Possibly the most Instagrammed hairdo in 2017, thanks to its youthful look and ability to make our faces look sharper and more V-shaped. Nothing says “Instagrammer” more than a hefty, gravity-defying topknot. Unfortunately, it just comes across looking a little, well, cliché these days.

Try instead:
The quirkier double bun or power braids, as demonstrated by Sonia too. The girl is not afraid to break boundaries with her hairdo!

Guy bangs

There was a point in 2017 where it seemed like every male celeb (and his male following) was sporting heavy, lush guy bangs, hoping to channel the doe-eyed innocence of K-pop and K-drama stars. Frankly, we can’t wait for our guys to become men again.

Man bun

If we see another man bun on the streets, we would have to be physically restrained from yanking at it in a fit of righteous rage. Man buns should never have become a trend, period.

Try instead:
Anything, just anything else is more attractive than a man bun, including the fearsomely geeky centre-part.

Korean straight eyebrows

Yet another massive trend in 2017 that can be attributed to K-pop. The stick-straight, thick and caterpillar-like Korean brow is meant to make one look more youthful than one’s age. We know, it doesn’t make much sense to us either.

Try instead:
Maybe just the most flattering brow shape for your specific face? That seemed to work great for everyone for the past few decades.

Metallic lipstick

2017 was a year of matte lippies, interrupted briefly by a bout of metallic lip madness thanks to ‘90s nostalgia. We like matte lips, which looks set to be a strong trend going into the new year. Metallic lips, not so much.

Try instead:
Stick to matte or velvety-matte, or a dual-toned lip tint, which we garner is about to become a thing in 2018.

The man perm

Ok, we are totally still nostalgic for the Boys Over Flowers cuties but we draw the line at the resurgence of the Goo Joon Pyo man perm, which our local hunks seem to be embracing. Admittedly we’re biased against man perms of any kind, but these frizzy, tight curls top our list of most unattractive hairdos for dudes.

Try instead:
Not perming? Most of us Asians (guys included) have got some kind of natural wave in our hair, so feel free to pump up the volume and amplify your natural texture with hair styling products like volumising mousse, texturising paste or just plain ‘ole wax. If you absolutely MUST have curls, opt for a subtler Korean wave-type perm as oppose to tight ringlets.
