Easy-peasy ways to wear the colour of the year

Every year, beauty junkies await the announcement from Pantone for its colour of the year. And unlike last year’s Ultraviolet that was a little tricky to wear on the face, 2019’s colour - Living Coral, is a walk in the park. Described by Pantone experts, it is “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge”.

The not quite orange, not quite pink hue is perfect on the eyes, cheeks and lips. Best bit? This colour is easy to wear for both makeup pros and newbies alike.

Still not convinced? Here’s some inspiration from some of our favourite K-celebs:

Inspiration: Twice’s Chaeyoung and Tzuyu (left), F(x)’s Luna (centre), Red Velvet’s Wendy, gugudan’s Mina, (G)Idle’s Yuqi, Suzy Bae (right)

How: It looks like Living Coral is a favourite colour of many K-celebs with Red Velvet’s Wendy, gugudan’s Mina and (G)Idle’s Yuqi all being fans of this colour wearing it as an all-over mono-tone look. Even Twice’s maknae line - Chaeyoung and Tzuyu, were sported with this feminine hue on the eyes, cheeks and lips at their recent school graduation.

The key is to play with different textures, for instance shimmer eyeshadows on the eyes paired with a matte lippie. Alternatively, use varying shades to create a mono-tone look, just like Suzy Bae who chose a slightly brighter coral for her lips while keeping the eyes and cheeks in a softer peach-based colour.

But if you prefer to go bolder, channel Luna. From lids to cheeks and lips, the singer chose brighter and warmer coral hues that perfectly complement her sunny personality.

Inspiration: Sulli (left), gugudan’s Hana, Red Velvet’s Irene, Pony (Park Hye Min), Momoland’s Nancy, Gfriend’s Yerin

How: The great thing about this colour is that you can wear it on the lids in a variety of ways. You can opt for a wash of one coral hue across the lids like Sulli or give it more depth and definition by topping it off with a brown eyeshadow and extending the shade to the outer corner of the eye like gugudan’s Hana (centre).

To ensure that the eyes don’t appear puffy or worse, look like you might have pink eye, define the eyes with an eyeliner along the waterline - use a brown or chocolate hue to keep the finish soft and feminine, and/or coat lashes with lots of mascara to get them flutter-worthy, which is exactly what Red Velvet’s Irene (right), has done.

Inspiration: IZ*ONE's Eun Bi (left), Girl's Generation's Taeyeon (centre), (G)Idle's Miyeon (right)

How: Coral has always been a favourite amongst many as a blush, and this updated version is a softer version that is super easy to wear. With its peach-pink hue, it gives a natural flush as seen on (G)Idle’s Miyeon, Suzy Bae and Iz One’s Eun Bi. Worn on the fleshy apples of the cheeks, it also adds a youthful glow. Or choose a sunset inspired shade and apply that onto the cheekbones to add warmth to your complexion, just like Girls Generation’s Taeyeon.

How: A coral lip can easily brighten a complexion just like a bold red or striking pink. Do as Sky Castle’s Kim Hye Yoon with a clean complexion and just slick of the coral colour in a matte finish on the lips.

For a more glamorous look, define the eyes and lashes with black liner and lots of mascara or use a shimmer eyeshadow to line the eyes for a more feminine finish like Blackpink’s Rosé.

Want to channel your inner power woman? Try a brighter coral - choose one that has a bit of red in it, just like actresses Yoo In Na to dress up any look instantly.
