Can these sweat and waterproof makeup items really withstand Singapore’s heat and humidity?

There is a very slight difference between sweat-proof, waterproof and smudge-proof makeup.

According to makeup artist, Larry Yeo, a lot of times the terms are interchangeably used by beauty brands. And that the main difference is the combination of ingredients used in the formulas, such as the combination of waxes and oils.

And if like me, you still tend to get that tell-tale black smudge under the eyes even after wearing waterproof mascara, Larry recommends using products that contain less wax and that form a solid film to keep oil, sweat and water out.

But in short, anything that is sweat proof (sweat-resistant) or smudge proof (smudge-resistant) often means that the formula breaks down with water while waterproof formulations do not.

The Promise: A matte finish foundation that not only gives skin coverage but also protects against sun damage while being sweat and humidity resistant.

The Reality: The foundation is very liquid in texture, so a little bit goes a long way. It also sets really fast, so applying a little at a time and blending quickly is key. With its matte finish, it keeps complexion shine-free, which makes midday touch-ups hardly necessary. However, if skin feels a little dry on the surface, using a hydrating primer before will help this foundation apply easier.

The Promise: Separates, lengthens and curls lashes without clumping for 24-hours. Also said to be sweat and humidity resistant, so no more panda eyes.

The Reality: Lengthens? Check. Curls? Check. Separated and defined? Check. And after a whole day out, there’s hardly any trace of smudging or flakes on the lower eye area. The downside is that the formula is a little wet upon application, so it can smudge at first if you’re not careful.

3. Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer, $49 (comes in 8 shades)

The Promise: Offers 12-hours of crease-resistant wear with medium to full coverage thanks to a Skin Fusion Technology that is transfer, sweat and water-resistant.

The Reality: This dries to a powder finish, which doesn’t settle into the fine lines around the eyes, which is great if you’re like me and have a lot of lines from laughing too much (and yes, from age too). The coverage is very natural and easy to blend to conceal dark under-eye circles and the odd blemish spot. Minimal touch up is needed, even at the end of the day, as the coverage is still pretty much intact.

The Promise: A three-in-one brow product that incorporates a pencil, powder and brush to help achieve perfectly groomed brows

The Reality: This is not new to market, but the brand is finally available in Singapore. It’s my current go-to brow product. The pencil helps define the brows while the powder fills in the sparse areas. And no matter how hot the day is or how much I’ve perspired, my brows still look perfectly groomed.

5. Mamonde Easy Drawing Gel Liner, $20 (comes in 3 shades)

The Promise Easier to control than a liquid liner and more intense than a pencil liner, this gel liner easily defines the eyes and is smudge-proof too.

The Reality I have oily lids and they are the bane of my existence. Plus, I tend to laugh heartily, which means I almost always have that annoying black smudge on my lower eye area. But this gel liner not only applies easily, but after a full day at the office and dinner with friends, doesn’t smudge and looks pretty much as good as it did in the morning. Just wished that the applicator brush bristles were a tad stiffer, so that it’ll be easier to achieve a thicker, bold line.

The Promise A waterproof eyeshadow stick that delivers shimmer-infused colour while keeping lids feeling fresh and hydrated with its water-rich formula.

The Reality Upon application, this feels really cool on the lids. It glides on easily and doesn’t tug on lids like other crayon-like eyeshadows I’ve tried. And even after a night out celebrating a friend’s wedding, my eye makeup stayed intact.

7. Decorté Powder Blush, $70 (comes in 4 shades)

The Promise: A soft powder blush that contains silicone gel to repel sweat and sebum while an oil-based agent in the formulation ensures long-lasting colour throughout.

The Reality: This blends easily on the skin and a little is all you need to get that healthy flush. The subtle shimmer also gives cheeks a soft glow throughout the day, which thankfully isn’t the unflattering kind from too much perspiration. But being a powder blush, the staying power isn’t very lasting on this. If you’re looking for something that lasts the day, you’ll be better off with a liquid or cream blush stain instead.

8. ZA ByeBye Shine Base UV SPF25/PA+++, $18.90

The Promise: Contains an Oil Blotting Powder that absorbs sebum and a Stay-Fresh Technology that repels sweat, keeping complexion smooth and shine-free for up to 12-hours.

The Reality: As a makeup base, it instantly gives complexion a matte finish, even when using a foundation that would have given me a dewy glow. And even after walking around under the scorching hot sun, my makeup was relatively shine-free.

9. Shiseido UV Lip Color Splash SPF42/PA+++, $33 (comes in 4 shades)

The Promise With Shiseido’s exclusive SuperVeil-UV 360 Technology, Clear Defense Gel Complex and safflower oil, this lip colour not only protects against damaging UV rays but hydrates and seals in moisture to keep lips soft and supple.

The Reality In all honesty, a lip colour can’t really be sweat-proof, but it can definitely be long-lasting. And the key to it is being budge-proof, which this one is thanks to the safflower oil that creates an emollient effect locking the colour in. And unlike other glossy lip colours that slip and slide, this sits perfectly on the lips and doesn’t migrate southwards, even in the heat and humidity. And knowing that this has sun protection properties makes it even better as it keeps lips protected against the damaging UV rays.
