Four easy steps to nailing the lip trend that’s fit for royalty

While the “just bitten lips” trend is not new, the look is all the rage once again thanks to the popular Chinese drama, Story of Yanxi Palace.

According to makeup artist, Larry Yeo, this look actually dates back to the ancient Chinese dynasty where it was believed that a smaller pout - 樱桃小口 or “small peach mouth” (literal translation) - was deemed a desirable look on women.

Yeo adds that this look has also been seen on major fashion runways since the 1990s. In short, “Story of Yanxi Palace takes the lipstick shape of Chinese dynasties past and has adapted it for women of the internet era.”

On Weibo, Guerlain also revealed that the lipsticks used in the show are none other than their Rouge G lipsticks. To emulate Empress Fuca’s grace and royalty, her lips are kept in a happy coral hue - Rouge G No. 45, while the show’s villainess, Consort Xian, dons a rosy terracotta shade - Rouge G No. 3 – to embody her strength and beauty. Consort Ling, the star of the show, steals each scene with her intelligence, wit, and rose-bud lips, thanks to Rouge G No. 62.

So it doesn’t matter if you’re cheering Wei Ying Luo on in her quest to avenge her sister’s death or just want to be swept away by the grandeur of the set designs and costumes, here’s how you can get an updated royal court lady look:

With its demure appeal, Yeo adds that this look “also works well if you want to try bright lip colours, but still have fears about going so bold”. Here’s how to achieve the look in four easy steps:

Step 1: There’s nothing worse than dry lips for any lip look. Yeo’s remedy? Apply a non-fragranced lip balm generously over the lips. “It needs to feel thick and greasy.” Leave this for five minutes. Then, using raw sugar, scrub the lips to gently exfoliate any dead, flaky skin. Wipe off with a baby wipe, and add another layer of lip balm.

Step 2

Apply a light wash of liquid foundation or a beige lipstick — it should be a shade lighter than your natural lip colour, along the lip line. “The beige lipstick should not be too pale in colour or it can make you look like the walking dead.”

Step 3

Update the look by using a stronger lip colour (like a bold red, pink or even deep plum) on the inner parts of the lips — on the top and bottom. “Avoid darker shades as they can make you look more angsty than Lolita,” says Yeo.

With your finger, dab the colour out, blending it into the foundation coverage along the outer rim of your lips. “Remember, this look is supposed to look like a stain, so you should only cover 50 per cent of your lip with colour.” For best results, Yeo recommends matte lipsticks and lip stains.

Step 4

Complete the look with a wash of cheek colour that matches your chosen lip colour. Yeo says to dab a cream blush onto the apples of the cheeks, then lightly blot with a tissue to leave a stain-like colour. And don’t forget to finish with full and lush brows.
