Local celebs’ best and worst looks of 2019

For every terrible outfit we spotted on a local artiste this year, there was one that was so good, all was forgotten – that is, until we checked Instagram the following week and smacked our heads at all the misguided OOTDs... and the cycle begins all over again.

So, without further ado, here are the best and worst looks from some of our local celebs. (P.S. If you’re wondering why we didn’t include some of your favourites, it’s because they either didn’t have a “worst” to choose from - or, erm, they didn’t have anything that could pass as a “best”.)

Here’s to a more fashionable 2020!

Joanne Peh

Worst: This is what happens when you let your daughter pick your outfit.

Best: This eye-catching (for the right reasons) look that Joanne wore to the gala opening of the Phantom of the Opera musical. Fun fact: Joanne was supposed to wear this stunning Mikael D gown to the Star Awards but it did not arrive in time for the ceremony.

Zoe Tay

Worst: Ah Jie is a bandana and crystal ball away from channelling a gypsy fortune teller.

Best: Zoe never lets us down on the red carpet and this part tuxedo, part equestrian look at the Star Search finals is no exception.

Elvin Ng

Elvin Ng

Worst: Elvin may be “feelin’ like a rockstar” but his yellow acid-wash jacket is giving us a rocking headache.

Best: This futuristic look, however, suits him well. Doesn’t he look like he just stepped out of the set of Star Trek?

Fiona Xie

Fiona Xie

Worst: Is that a rat’s nest on Fiona’s head?

Best: This traffic-stopping getup featuring a waistcoat with a low plunging neckline probably sent  street style photographers at New York Fashion Week into a frenzy.

Rui En

Worst: Let this look serve as a reminder to all about what happens when you spend so much time on your hair and makeup that you forget to iron your outfit.

Best: Now, this is the polished Rui En that we know and love. Fierce!

Shane Pow

Shane Pow

Worst: Shane, you are 20 years too old to be donning dungarees. And no, wearing just one strap doesn’t make it cooler.

Best: Shane attended the Busan International Film Festival looking dapper in a maroon suit, grey turtleneck top, and matching kicks. It’s simple, sleek, and stylish.

Rebecca Lim

Rebecca Lim

Worst: Is that cummerbund really necessary?

Best: Black might be a safe colour, but Becks’s Valentino gown is anything but boring, thanks to the dramatic-looking ruffles.

Julie Tan

Julie Tan

Worst: This disco ball outfit Julie wore to Bottega Veneta’s opening at ION Orchard. She would have looked tonnes better had she worn the sequinned coat as a dress with a matching sash to nip in the waist.

Best: This 80s-style bustier scarf dress featuring Roman prints and a gigantic bow on the front is bold, fun, and colourful, just like Julie.

Jeffrey Xu
Jeffrey Xu
28 Dec 2019

Jeffrey Xu

Worst: Jeffrey looks like he ducked out of his scuba-diving expedition mid-way but was in such a rush, he forgot to change out of his wetsuit and dry his hair.

Best: Jeffrey’s checked suit with embroidered patches is different enough to make him stand out without making him look like he is trying too hard.

Ian Fang

Ian Fang

Worst: Trying too hard, Exhibit A.

Best: Only Ian can make something traditional like the Mao suit look swag.

Felicia Chin

Felicia Chin

Worst: Anyone else getting Yoko Ono vibes from this look?

Best: This floaty, feminine gown from the Giambattista Valli x H&M collection was a breath of fresh air at the Star Search 2019 finals.

He Ying Ying

He Ying Ying

Worst: The last time we saw so much gingham was on a picnic table.

Best: This sparkly number Ying Ying wore to the Star Awards. Not only did it shine the spotlight on her amazing figure, we’re pretty sure the bustier top sent her male fans’ hearts racing.

Desmond Tan

Desmond Tan

Worst: While we applaud Desmond for his daring style choices, this Prada turtleneck is too cartoony for our tastes.

Best: Superman curl aside, Desmond looks incredibly handsome in this Dior suit. We like that he made his suit less serious and more playful by swapping the usual plain shirt with a printed one.

Hong Ling
Hong Ling
28 Dec 2019

Hong Ling

Worst: That cropped-above-the-boobs top just makes no sense at all.

Best: Dressed in a metallic plunging suit, Hong Ling oozed sexiness and confidence at the Singapore International Film Festival.

Jeanette Aw

Jeanette Aw

Worst: Someone from our team commented that the mesh dress looks like the netting you find around fruits at the supermarket and we can’t say we disagree.

Best: This Louis Vuitton ensemble of knitted cropped top, leather jacket, and high-waisted pants that Jeanette wore to the After the Stars press conference. It's sleek, luxe, and a li'l rock-and-roll.

Tong Bingyu

28 Dec 2019

Tong Bingyu

Worst: It looks like Bingyu forgot to remove the salon cape after getting her hair done.

Best: Bingyu accented her black gown with pops of gold and the results are nothing short of classy.

Nathan Hartono

Nathan Hartono

Worst: This rainbow tie-dye sweatshirt. With doodles. Not even Nathan can pull this off.

Best: These maroon silk PJs, on the other hand, look chic on the singer. A little Hugh Hefner-ish, but chic.

Bonnie Loo

Bonnie Loo

Worst: Did Bonnie upcycle her 2018 Star Awards gown? It looks a little better, but still reminds us of undergarments.

Best: Another undergarment-inspired frock, but done right this time. This bustier dress from Armani is the perfect mix of cute and sexy.

Lawrence Wong

Lawrence Wong

Worst: Everything about this look, from the chunky chain and oversized suit to the head-to-toe black wardrobe, screams bouncer (albeit a very fashionable one).

Best: Not only does Lawrence cut a suave figure in this pink suit, he is glowing in it.
