Star Awards: Eyebrow-raising looks you forgot existed
If you thought Lee Teng's "pimp" getup at last year’s Star Awards was outrageous, he's got nothing on what these stars donned to the glitzy ceremony in the early noughties. From fur coats and accessories, to psychedelic and “burglar” styles, here are some bizarre red carpet looks that deserve a little exposure.

22 Mar 2017
Christopher Lee (2001)
While velvet suits are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, we hope that velvet track pants – paired with velvet suit jackets, no less – remain firmly in the past.

22 Mar 2017
Paige Chua (Show 2, 2013)
If Paige didn’t tell us this was a Christian Siriano gown, we would have thought she wrapped herself with an orange rug.

22 Mar 2017
Bryan Wong (Show 2, 2010)
(Pecs) party on the front, business on the back. Woo hoo!

22 Mar 2017
Dawn Yeoh (Show 2, 2007)
As if rocking a goth princess look were not enough for Dawn, she went full-on gothic lolita at the 2007 Star Awards.

22 Mar 2017
Xie Shaoguang (2001)
Shaoguang was not nominated for an award that year so apparently, he decided to bring his own (hunting) trophy with him to the ceremony.

22 Mar 2017
Pierre Png, Zheng Geping, Chen Hanwei, and Dai Xiang Yu (Show 2, 2011)
While we’d normally rage about Pierre’s baggy suit, it looks pretty decent compared to Geping’s exposed chest, Hanwei’s Laffy Taffy shoes, and Xiang Yu’s resemblance to an anaconda.

22 Mar 2017
Yvonne Lim (2001)
Quetzalcoatl called, he wants his plumage back.

22 Mar 2017
Dai Xiang Yu (Show 2, 2009)
While Zhang Zhenhuan (left) and Dasmond Koh’s outfits haven’t aged well, we’re getting the biggest kick out of Xiang Yu’s “Barbie and Ken on ice” look.

22 Mar 2017
Dasmond Koh (Show 2, 2009)
Dasmond’s tuxedo looks like it got struck by a hurricane on his way to the Star Awards.

22 Mar 2017
Michelle Chia (Show 2, 2011)
Maybe it’s the heat or we’re just thirsty, but Michelle’s breastplate left us craving strawberry Slurpees.

22 Mar 2017
Hong Hui Fang (Show 2, 2002)
We’re going to blame this one on Lord of the Rings’ popularity that year.

22 Mar 2017
Ben Yeo (2005)
Ben should count himself lucky that he wore this outfit before The Dark Knight turned purple suits into a Halloween costume.

22 Mar 2017
Dasmond Koh (Show 1, 2010)
Did Dasmond forget that he was hitting the red carpet and not the ski slopes?

22 Mar 2017
Nat Ho (2007)
This look might be horribly passé, but in Nat’s defence, Pirates of the Caribbean WAS pretty big in 2007….

22 Mar 2017
Jeanette Aw (Show 1, 2007)
Jeanette looked less like an A-list actress and more like The Great Pumpkin from Peanuts at the Star Awards in 2007.

22 Mar 2017
Sora Ma (Show 2, 2013)
Looks like Sora got a yak hairdo to match her “hairy” dress. Or was it the other way round?

22 Mar 2017
Romeo Tan and Jeffrey Xu (Show 2, 2011)
Jeffrey must have fallen from heaven pretty hard, because this outfit is BUSTED. (Meanwhile, Romeo looks just like a Troll doll – you’ve come a long, long way, boys.)

22 Mar 2017
Chen Hui Hui (2001)
It’s understandable that some actresses want to look slim at the Star Awards, but Hui Hui took the skin and “bones” look a little too far.

22 Mar 2017
Jeanette Aw (Show 2, 2007)
We can’t help feeling a little nostalgic for the days when Jeanette would show up to Star Awards wearing something like this, which was a little over-the-top even by 2007’s standards.

22 Mar 2017
Shaun Chen (Show 2, 2011)
Was Shaun worried that his Star Awards look would be so forgettable that he decided to dress up a Hugh Hefner?

22 Mar 2017
Kelly Poon (2005)
Kelly is unrecognisable in a furry vest and skirt resembling craft paper.

22 Mar 2017
Terence Cao (2001)
Oh, Terence. How could you let this flirty burglar look fade into obscurity?

22 Mar 2017
Yao Wen Long (Show 1, 2007)
Terence Cao’s 2001 Star Awards look, getai version.

22 Mar 2017
Hong Hui Fang (Show 2, 2013)
Sorry Hui Fang, but this look with the renaissance shirt, glossy skirt and the blonde wig are giving us major cosplay vibes.

22 Mar 2017
Liu Qiulian (2002)
Qiulian’s combination of peekaboo bra and “look down here” necklace would have been perfect for our raunchiest looks feature.

22 Mar 2017
Thomas Ong (Show 1, 2014)
Thomas was probably going for shabby chic but ended up looking like a homeless boho.

22 Mar 2017
Mark Lee (Show 2, 2013)
Mark’s psychedelic suit and matching cumber band gave our eyes a bit of a seizure.

22 Mar 2017
Jeremy Chan (Show 2, 2010)
Looks like Jeremy was 25 years too late for the mullet trend.
