#THROWBACK: Celebs react to old Star Awards looks

Every year, we get very excited when April rolls around, not only in anticipation of the glitzy Star Awards (SA) ceremony, but also the fashion that comes along with it. So in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the event, we got the celebs to take a walk down memory lane to weigh in on their vintage SA looks. Let’s just say old isn’t always gold.

“ARGH! That was me?! Why was I so tanned? I think that was my very first Star Awards and I was in the running for Best Newcomer. Thanks for telling me I’ve aged. Although I looked very fresh, guys look better with a bit of maturity. I think it’s good that I started like that and have evolved in terms of dress sense. The look was probably arranged by an internal stylist and it suited me back then. But looking back, it is a bit cringe worthy.”

“I look so young. I think I just had my second kid then. Every year, my stylist will crack his head to come up with something for me and this is very different from what I usually wear. Everyone wolf-whistled at me that night because the dress was very short.”

Wah piang, I look so fat! I remember everyone said my outfit was not bad, very K-pop, but my friend said I was mad to wear a scarf in this hot weather. But who cares? I can remove it after walking the red carpet. I think my outfit is okay but it doesn’t go with my hairstyle and, erm, size. I am glad I lost weight and this is a reminder never to go back to that size. As for my hair, I thought I looked very suave then because I was the only one in Mediacorp with long hair, but now I think it is very ugly.”

“I was supposed to tuck the scarf into the blazer but my stylist said I should flaunt my ‘cleavage’ because I was very fit then, leaner than I am now. I remember Fann Wong tried to remove my blazer on stage and some of the female artistes joked that my chest was bigger than theirs! I looked okay but I probably wouldn’t rock this look again.”

“This gown is very flattering. It was specially designed for me by Francis Chong. When I first saw it, I was stunned by the plunging neckline. A lot of people went “wah!” when they saw me. I really wanted to cover my chest but I feel that, as an artiste, I have to be proud of the outfits that were designed for me, so I was very happy to wear it even though most people looked at my chest before my face! It’s quite awkward wearing such revealing outfits in front of my kids.

"I wore this when I received my All-Time Favourite Artiste award so it was a very special occasion for me. I’m very honoured that I had a chance to wear such gorgeous outfits at the most iconic moments of my career.”

“This is just salah. I don’t know why I wore this. This whole look is not suitable for Star Awards, especially at my age. I was quite hesitant about wearing this outfit because it’s too happening. I wanted to wear regular pants with a jacket and the vest but at the last minute, I couldn’t find anything suitable so I just went with this. I think there were people who b****ed about my outfit. I wouldn’t dress like this again. Now I will only wear a tux.”

“I really love this dress and the hair too. It made me feel like Elsa (from Frozen). Although the dress was heavy, I love it because I like red. I was wearing sneakers underneath so it was really comfortable. The feedback for this look was mainly positive so I would totally wear this again.”

“I love my hair! I really miss my short hair. I remember the skirt was too short. You could see my panties when I bent over. The designer cut off too much during the fitting, so they had to add an extra layer underneath. I don’t think I looked stunning, but I am fine as long as I don’t look like a disaster.”

(Laughs hysterically) This is not me, this is actually my sister. What kind of fashion is this?! I feel like deleting this photo. Other than the Hello Kitty, none of this was my idea. What was I thinking?! I remember wearing this outfit but I don’t recall how I felt back then. But I think this is quite iconic. I doubt anyone would wear this. Everyone has a past…”

“This is a bit too casual but since it was for Show 1, I think it is fine. I pulled these pieces from my own wardrobe and just turned up for the show. I didn’t even wear makeup. There were too many people and it’s too chaotic backstage, so I didn’t bother to get someone to style me. I wore the scarf because it was cold in the theatre, not for aesthetic reasons.”

“I quite like the look though I remember the media said I wore a carpet to the show. I like how flamboyant it was but it was a tad long and difficult to move around in. I understand what's considered beautiful is highly subjective and I respect the creation of every designer and stylist. My only concern for dresses is that it shouldn't be too revealing or too short, so I will usually try out a few gowns and choose the one that is the most suitable out of the lot.”

“This is horrifying! Who did this to me? This looks like something someone would wear to perform at a getai show and it doesn’t even fit me well. I don’t think I was trying to be adventurous or experimental, I probably didn’t know any better and just wore whatever the stylist gave me. Not that I have much of a fashion sense now but I definitely wouldn’t wear this now. Everyone else [in the photo] is so normally dressed. Why me?!”

“I think the suit is pretty cool. I always have a good laugh at myself whenever I see past pictures. I don’t understand how I felt so good about myself back then. I think the suit got a thumbs up from Toggle. The print is unique but I wanted something more androgynous to go with my blonde hair. I might rock it even better now.”

“Wow, I had bangs! I’ve erased this look from my memory. My confidence level was quite high when I left the salon because I thought I could carry off the bowl cut but now I think otherwise. I look a bit blur. As for the outfit, it is regrettable. I would style it differently if I were to wear this again. I remember posting a photo of this on Instagram but have since deleted it because I find it a bit disturbing.”

“I was really happy with this gown because it made me feel like a princess. I’ve always wanted to be a princess. I looked so elegant and I like that it covered the right places like my arms. That year, I told my stylists that I wanted to wear a nude colour gown, so they chose this for me. I was very grateful to them because they made an effort to do this for me.”

“Can you remind me when this was? I look quite fat in the picture. I don’t know why. I think the look is not too bad, but the pants are killing me. It’s too baggy, like it’s almost dropping, and there’s too much going on with the shirt. There’s the lacy material, the gingham down the middle, bow tie running across and the chameleon-like thing over the neck. If given a choice, I would do without the bow tie or change the blazer or shirt. Good job digging out this picture because I have no recollection of this!”

“I look like I am pregnant. I look short and stubby and my boobs look like they are about to fall out. I wouldn’t wear a dress like this now. It was probably very comfortable because it’s loose and I didn’t have to suck in my tummy, but the photo doesn’t do it justice. It makes me look fat.”

“This was one of my most memorable Star Awards because it was the first time I received an award, Best Info-Ed Programme Host. That year, we had a runway show and when I got there, I realised everyone was wearing black and I was the only one in pink. I decided I might as well go all out so I put on a pair of white sunglasses to stand out even more. Everyone looked like my bodyguard! I was quite happy with this look and even now it doesn’t look that dated.”

“It’s really short! I was showing too much skin, but I like the print and the dress. It might be a look - including the hair - which you’ll never see again. I don’t think I will go blonde again. The hair was for a drama and at that age I was probably trying to do something different. I would love to experiment with different hair colours if there were no side effects but this was quite harmful. I think I looked good, but I would change the shoes because [the high cut] makes my legs look short. My stylist will kill me after seeing these comments. (laughs)

“I remember this outfit! A local designer wanted to dress me that year, so I told her to be creative and do whatever she wanted. She had this specially made for me and I really like it because I prefer a more androgynous look. I like white shirts and anything with leather. That year, I decided to go bold so I picked a blonde wig. There were mixed comments about this look and I remember some people said it looked a bit like cosplay.”

“I think it is very daring and not very ‘local’. Don’t you think it looks like a Thai restaurant waitress' uniform? It is always a [tube top] with a sash. She definitely wouldn’t wear this now. As for the hair - how do I say this without getting myself into trouble - you don’t have much options when it comes to short hair. It’s either you slick it back or style it this way. I can only emphasise that there is no right or wrong.”
