What the stars ate this week

This week, Desmond Tan had to-die-for beef in Japan, Tay Ping Hui indulged in spicy mala fish paired with a jumbo you tiao, and Lee Teng got “nosy” when it came to dessert. Meanwhile, Chantalle Ng, Edwin Goh, He Ying Ying and Chen Yixi got together for an early Christmas celebration, and Rosalyn Lee played chef at one of her fave restaurants! Read on for more!

Desmond Tan

What he ate: Hida beef

Yummy factor: Desmond described the Hida beef he had at the traditional streets of Sanmanchi Suji in Takayama as “conversation-stoppingly good”. Lightly seared, slices of it were served on Japanese crackers with a touch of wasabi -- probably for an extra oomph. Mmm...

What she ate: Sea urchin pudding at Lolla

Yummy factor: "Wah! Wah! That's so good! It's insane," gushed Shu An as she tucked into her creamy and luscious uni and squid ink pudding. Those stained lips at the end of the meal are worth it.

Edwin Goh, He Ying Ying, Chen Yixi, and Chantalle Ng,

What they ate: Christmas feast

Yummy factor: The quartet got together to celebrate Christmas and we love what they've got to munch on - mini churros, cupcakes, olives, fruits and lots of lemonade (with a whole basket of fresh lemons) to share.

What she ate: Cheese pizza

Yummy factor: Ah Jie admitted that she’s “been eating quite a bit” whilst holidaying in Japan, but we find nothing wrong with that, especially when the oven-fired pizza she’s holding on to is oozing with cheesy goodness and looks absolutely delish.

What he ate: Artistic, but freaky, bites from Nudake by Gentle Monster

Yummy factor: Lee Teng visited Mars Cafe, the new dessert concept store by cult eyewear brand Gentle Monster at Beijing SKP-S, and had nose-shaped (matcha-chocolate velvet cake) and ear-shaped bites (jelly dessert made with coconut). Even the brioche came in quirky shapes - sheep-shaped buns, anyone?

What she ate: Mookata with a twist at 555 Villa Thai

Yummy factor: Fancy having mookata with tom yum broth, instant noodles, fish balls, grilled meat and bak kwa, like how Pat enjoyed hers? We bet the bak kwa tasted extra yummy after.

What she ate: Laksa risotto

Yummy factor: Rozz got to be a guest chef at Esquina in celebration of the restaurant’s 8th anniversary, where she dished out her own rendition of her fave Mexican prawn aguachile with prawns and scallop sashimi, as well as a laksa risotto. Psst.. each serving of risotto came garnished with a meaty crab claw, and the stock used was reduced from chicken stock infused with carabinero prawns seared with ginger and garlic. With her successful culinary endeavour, we won’t be surprised if Rozz decides to open a restaurant next.

Pornsak

What he ate: Swiss burger and potato wedges at McDonald’s in Switzerland

Yummy factor: While his 100% Swiss beef burger was a little on the dry side, and he couldn’t really tell the difference between Swiss and non-Swiss meat, Pornsak was pleasantly surprised by the spicy curry sauce. It’s spicier than our local version, with a rich taste of spices. Safe to say, he probably polished off the whole container with his potato wedges!

What he ate: "Twin" oysters

Yummy factor: What could be better than a tray of freshly-shucked oysters, you ask? Well, for Enlai, it’s discovering “twin” oysters within a single shell!

Tay Ping Hui

What he ate: Sichuan fish when he was in Shanghai

Yummy factor: Mala may not be his top choice for lunch, but Ping Hui couldn't help but wolf down his Sichuan-style fish with pickled greens - the spices were done just right, and it came with a crispy dough fritter that was as big as his forearm!

What she ate: Stinky tofu and other Taiwanese street food

Yummy factor: Whilst Bonnie didn’t seem too impressed with the Taiwanese-style fermented beancurd in front of her, she did enjoy her other street food finds, like piping hot egglet and bubble tea from I’Milky!

Yummy factor: As part of her final assessment for her patisserie course, Jeanette made an edible artpiece entirely out of chocolate. And she only took two hours to complete the impressive floral-themed feat.

Yummy factor: Never mind the chilly weather in Germany - nothing will get in the way of Sonia and her ice cream! Is it just us, or is her waffle cone larger than usual?

Sora Ma

What she ate: Min jiang kueh

Yummy factor: Sora got herself an old school peanut pancake from Pancake King at Serangoon Garden Market, which prides itself on its “money back guarantee”. Other than wishing the skin was a little thinner, Sora loved the snack. Try the cakes too, Sora!

Tay Kewei and family

What they ate: Japanese-style mochi

Yummy factor: Kewei and her family tried out a famous mochi in Japan, which she found to be very chewy but a little thick. The highlight of the experience, however, has got to be watching little Shen Momo trying to get a bite out of his daddy Alfred Sim’s portion!
