What the stars ate this week

The past week has been nothing short of drool-worthy - Ah Jie Zoe Tay’s birthday celebration with her celeb pals featured plenty of yummy eats, Justin Ang was gifted an upsized “Happy Meal”, and Sora Ma wolfed down a juicy ramly burger. Also worthy of mention is Edwin Goh’s attempt to torch his own dessert, as well as Zhang Zetong and Desmond Tan’s ice cream run! Read on to see what the rest of the stars had.

Dennis Chew and Chen Hanwei

What they ate: Thai street food at Raan Jay Fai

Yummy factor: Dennis patiently queued four hours for the signature crab omelette, a massive egg roll completely filled with chunks of sweet, juicy crab meat, from the famous 1 Michelin Star Thai eatery in Bangkok, and it looks like the 1,000 baht  (around S$45) he spent on the deep-fried egg dish alone was well worth the money. As for the rest of the dishes like Pad Thai, Hanwei felt they were too salty and overrated.

Justin Ang

What he ate: Lots of chicken nuggets and fries

Yummy factor: For his birthday, Justin got his own upsized version of a Happy Meal from Class 95 partner Vernon A - a wicked combo of 10 packs of large fries, 40 nuggets (spicy and original), a bottle of curry sauce and a whole chocolate cake. We hope he’s sharing!

What she ate: Ramly burger

Yummy factor: Would you just look at Sora’s juicy ramly burger from Banafee Village in Johor Bahru? There's just something about the winning combination of fried egg, melted cheese and gooey chilli sauce sandwiched between pillowy-soft buns that has us craving for our own right now.

Regene Lim

What she ate: Fried chicken and Okinawa-style soba

Yummy factor: Thanks to Shane Pow’s recommendation, Regene, who is filming upcoming drama All Around You in Okinawa, is new fan of convenience store chain Lawson’s fried chicken cutlet that’s oh-so-crispy and delish. On their day off, the pair also checked out the local food and had slurp-worthy Okinawa-style soba at a nondescript eatery. We think those thick slabs of pork belly and fried chicken are worth getting fat for!

Edwin Goh

What he ate: “Chao tah” meringue dessert

Yummy factor: After having his fill of fancy eats like oysters, foie gras and caviar, Edwin attempted to torch his own dessert at a fine dining event. Although the meringue bit turned out looking a little too burnt, we bet it tasted just as yummy!

What they ate: Birthday feast

Yummy factor: Happy birthday, Ah Jie! She received lots of love during her birthday week, and her celebratory meal at Famous Treasure with fellow artistes featured steamed crabs with egg white, a whole suckling pig, and more. There were theatrics aplenty as well, where a whole chicken was served in flames. Also noteworthy was the ice-cream cake from The Dark Gallery Zoe got to enjoy while filming on set. The butterscotch confection is perfect to cool down with.

Apple Hong

What she ate: Mala bak kwa fried rice

Yummy factor: While frying diced bak kwa with rice may not be uncommon, Apple has taken it up a notch with a mala version of the dish, thanks to the spicy snack from Mr. Bae. Complemented with scrambled eggs, leafy veggies and Konjac rice, we bet it must have made a shiok and guilt-free meal.

Hong Huifang

What she ate: Birthday dinner at Izy Fook

Yummy factor: Happy belated birthday, Huifang jie! The actress turned 60 on Jan 7 and celebrated the occasion with husband Zheng Geping and children Calvert Tay and Tay Ying. We don’t know about you, but we’re craving for the cereal prawns, prawn mee and assorted roast meats they enjoyed - especially the sio bak!

Jae Liew

What she ate: Lots of dim sum and yu sheng at Din Tai Fung

Yummy factor: To avoid staining her white top, Jae had the foresight to ask for a bib before participating in an enthusiastic lou hei (there were at least two plates of yu shengs!). Of course, no meal at the restaurant chain is complete without their signature pork cutlet, as well as popular sides like Jae’s fave - fragrant pork wrapped around cucumber sticks and doused in garlic sauce.

Qi Yuwu

What he ate: Three plates of pasta

Yummy factor: When Yuwu told Joanne he was going to order his third main dish instead of dessert, she thought he was kidding. So when she returned to the table and saw that he was polishing off his third main, a meatball pasta dish, whilst watching a mukbang video (loosely translated as eating broadcast in Korean), she couldn’t contain her shock and amusement! Well, the food must’ve been really good, or Yuwu must’ve been really hungry!

Cynthia Koh

What she ate: Caviar

Yummy factor: Talk about fancy... Cynthia had beluga caviar worth S$380 a pop, and mused that it’s “best eaten on its own”. We’d take our time to savour the decadent treat too if we were her!

What they ate: Japanese soft serve

Yummy factor: Ice cream, anyone? Despite the sweater-friendly weather in Okinawa, Zetong and Desmond decided to get themselves a soft serve cone anyway. Or in Desmond’s case, two!

What she ate: Claypot yong tau foo at Kok Sen Coffee Shop

Yummy factor: Rozz is a serious foodie, so if she recommends something, it’s gotta be good. Here’s Rozz looking most pleased at Kok Sen Coffee Shop, where she tucked into both traditional clay pot yong tau foo (check out the thick slices of fried brinjal stuffed with fish paste) and a hearty bowl of big prawn noodles.

What she ate: Champagne brunch at Barnacles by the Sea

Yummy factor: Jamie indulged in a fancy champagne brunch, where bubbles were accompanied by fresh oysters, whole lobsters and more. Also, we love how she got to pair her lobster with a solid char kuay teow that’s full of wok hei flavour!

Ya Hui

What she ate: Sweet potatoes

Yummy factor: Ya Hui packed her own lunch of baked purple sweet potatoes and stir-fried lady's fingers for work, and she looks like she can’t be happier to have something light after the deluge of festive meals.

Tay Kewei and Alfred Sim

What they ate: Truffles, lobsters and more

Yummy factor: For their fifth wedding anniversary, Kewei and Alfred paid a visit to Summer Pavilion where they indulged in a decadent Chinese dining experience. Think truffles, lobsters, geoduck and more. And although little Shen Momo didn’t fancy the truffle slices much, we think he’ll grow to appreciate its acquired taste when he’s older!

Hazelle Teo

What she ate: Runny scrambled eggs

Yummy factor: One of Hazelle’s must-visit restaurants in Hong Kong includes the often-bustling Australian Dairy Company, where she satisfied her cravings for perfectly runny golden-yellow scrambled eggs paired with toast and sliced ham. We think these will taste even better with cheese.

What she ate: MargheritapPizza

Yummy factor: On her day off, Jacelyn shared a thin-crust margherita pizza topped with lots of mozzarella cheese with her son Zavier, who looks super pleased with their meal of choice!

Kelly Poon

What she ate: Juicy oysters

Yummy factor: Aside from a full table’s worth of Thai food, which included basil pork and crabs, Kelly also slurped up fresh oysters whilst enjoying the view of the sea from her seat. Paired with raw garlic and a drizzle of fresh lime juice, the oysters must’ve been a real treat!

Jade Seah

Jade Seah

What she ate: Spicy leek ramen

Yummy factor: Considering that Jade’s in Hokkaido for a snowboarding trip, there’s probably no better way to keep herself warm and toasty than slurping up a big bowl of ramen -- complete with a ramen egg and charsiu after an icy day out.
