What the stars ate this week

These stars whet our appetites with food, glorious food: Desmond Tan teaches us how to create the perfect avocado toast; Chew Chor Meng celebrates his 50th birthday with a starry guestlist; Jeanette Aw eats her way through Takasaki; Edmund Chen and Xiang Yun feast on sashimi; and Andrea De Cruz enjoys Hong Kong treats.

Desmond Tan

What he ate: Homemade avocado toast

Yummy factor: Chef Desmond decided to post a step-by-step video on how make his avocado toast after receiving many requests for the recipe, and it looks as easy and delish as he claims.

What she ate: Steamed ginger milk pudding at the famed Yee Shun Dairy Company in Hong Kong

Yummy factor: “Oooooh how I love thee!” captioned Andrea. Oh you don’t have to convince us Andrea. Those clean bowls say it all.

Chew Chor Meng

What he ate: Birthday cake during his celebration with his 118 family and friends including Priscelia Chan, Apple Hong and Felicia Chin

Yummy factor: The ombre frosting and plump strawberries make this cake look especially appetising, however we doubt there’s enough of it to go around. Oh well, it’s the company that counts, innit? Happy 50th birthday!

What she drank: Kopi-O

Yummy factor: Long hours on the set require some kopi-o gao and Carrie gets it delivered by her co-star Jasmine Sim. We all need girlfriends like this!

Eleanor Lee

What she ate: Barbecue ribs and snow cone and in LA

Yummy factor: The carnivore in us is dying for that rack of ribs that’s bigger than Eleanor’s face and a refreshing and light snow cone is the perfect dessert to end a heavy, meaty meal. Now, where can we get one in Singapore?

What they drank: Maotai (Chinese liquor) with Rebecca Lim and Ian Fang

Yummy factor: Xiuhuan said she bumped into the BFFs and they got down to chatting and having a drink. Hope they filled up on the Japanese delicacies before having a tipple.

Michelle Saram

What she ate: Omnipork

Yummy factor: The pretty actress goes green by tucking into a serving of plant-based pork meat. Using a proprietary blend of plant-based protein from pea, non-GMO soy, shiitake mushroom and rice, the faux pork patties are supposedly just as tasty as the real thing!

Nick Teo and Hong Ling

What they ate: The couple had a bake-off to see who can make better keto-friendly (aka carb free) waffles

Yummy factor: They look pretty much neck and neck, right down to the percentage of almost burnt bits. But if we had to vote, we’d choose Nick ‘cos he is the underdog.

Xiang Yun and Edmund Chen

What they ate: Japanese dinner at Wasabi Tei

Yummy factor: Check out the thick slabs of mekajiki (swordfish) sashimi and uni! This hole in the wall sushi bar at Far East Plaza is known for their affordable set meals and is our go-to place for Japanese food when we’re in the ‘hood. Be prepared to queue if you are heading down during peak hours.

What they ate: A wrap for him and deconstructed briyani for her at Botanica+Co in Kuala Lumpur

Yummy factor: The wrap looks a little underwhelming but we’re salivating over Felicia’s briyani. Perhaps a few more sides would elevate the dish.

What she ate: Gigantic pears and ice cream in Takasaki

Yummy factor: Jeanette said she has a newfound love for the fruit after sampling various varieties in Takasaki and is keen to use them in her baking. Well since there's little chance of us getting our hands on those juicy pears, can we have some of the cake, please?

Justin Ang

What he ate: Lobster rolls in Japan

Yummy factor: We’re huge fans of Luke’s decadent lobster rolls and would usually have more than one at a sitting. So four rolls for Justin looks about right.

Craving lobster rolls now? Here are some of the best in Singapore.

Pornsak

What he ate: Churros in Seville, Spain

Yummy factor: The loud crunch when Pornsak bit into the breakfast treat was music to our ears, though we couldn't help but roll our eyes when he described it as “very you zar kueh” (dough fritter). You can take the man out of Asia, but you can’t take the Asian out of the man. Tsk tsk.

Ooh Shu An

What she ate: What looks like ngor hiang, hearty soup and veggie rolls

Yummy factor: HOT! Not the food but the sensual way she was eating. Shu An should consider a sideline as a “mukbang” (eating broadcast) star.
