Turns out that ogres are more like steamed buns than onions

I like to eat it eat it: Cute mantous galore at DreamWorks KouKou Café

Yeah, we know: we’ve heard of Tsum Tsum and Funko Pops, but what the heck is KouKou? As delightfully superfluous as it sounds, DreamWorks has created “dumpling-shaped” interpretations of their most iconic characters, which include Shrek, Po (from Kung Fu Panda), and Alex and Skipper (from Madagascar).

KouKou (pronounced “KouKou” and derived from the Chinese word for ‘mouth’), made its global debut in Singapore last week – and naturally, that debut includes a pop-up cutesy café. Run by the same folks behind the Gudetama Café, the 50-seater DreamWorks KouKou Café, which is located on level 5 of Bugis+, features steamed buns and other Asian dishes fashioned after the aforementioned characters.

We had a chance to visit the DreamWorks KouKou Café right before its opening last week and can report that yes, everything is downright squee-inducing. Taste-wise, the quality is about what you can expect from a character café, so if you do decide to pay it a visit, we suggest that appreciate it for what it is: a kid-and-Instagram-worthy hotspot.

Take a look at the signature dishes and cute mantous here.

The DreamWorks KouKou Café is located on 201 Victoria Street Bugis+ #05-04/05/06
Singapore 188067
Open Monday to Sunday: 11:00 am – 10:00 pm

While we think that the KouKou Café missed an opportunity to place Shrek and Fiona inside a muddy beef stew filled with onions, a bowl of piping hot pho is just about as comforting as a 10th rewatch of their movie.

This dish of grilled salmon, fish cakes, mixed vegetables, and Japanese rice with Bechamel salted egg sauce pays homage to The Penguins of Madagascar’s trio of adorable commandos.

While most of the menu is catered for a kids’ palate, this kimchi ramen packs enough seafood and spice to please grownups at the table. (Flavour-wise, this was one of the more satisfying things that we tried, so give it a chance, even if you can’t stand the thought of chomping into poor Po and Mei.)

Night Fury Steak Rice ($18.50)

Some good news for the health-conscious: this otherwise sinfully creamy steak rice uses a nutritious type of grain. Even kids, who usually eschew anything other than white rice, might be tempted by the mound of forbidden black rice shaped like a Night Fury.

A.K.A. luo buo gao with a side of garlic aioli. Probably not the kind of carrot any DreamWorks characters had in mind, but this is an Asian interpretation, after all.

Hot pink rice might look kind of scary, especially when accompanied by curry, but not to worry – it’s dyed with beetroot, not with any artificial colouring.
