We ate all the rice bowls at RWS Donburi Championship… and now we rate them

Japanese food lovers, assemble! Resorts World Sentosa launched its inaugural RWS Summer Matsuri with a bang yesterday (Jun 6) and it’s food, glorious food at the indoor festival.

Held from June 6 to 9 at The Forum on level B1, guests can eat their way through Japan at the event, feasting on a dizzying array of delights including grilled seafood, desserts, sake and exclusive snacks from six regions and 10 prefectures while enjoying cultural performances and movie screenings.

But be sure to save some space for the delicious donburi, specifically six award-winning donburi, finalists at the popular Furusato Matsuri Tokyo in Japan, that will battle it out for the crown at the RWS Donburi Championship. Guests who purchase a donburi will receive a voting slip to vote for their favourite and the champion will be crowned on June 9.

We got a taste of the rice bowls at the festival opening yesterday and let’s just say we were a little surprised by the outcome. But don’t let our decision sway you. Go have a try and rate them yourself.

RWS Summer Matsuri runs till June 9, 5pm to 11pm, at Resorts World Sentosa, B1 Forum. Admission is free. More details here.

Oyakodon (Chicken and Egg bowl)

Where: Booth 10, Nagoya Torikai
Price: $10

This glorious mess of rice topped with tender chunks of chicken and egg simmered in a rich dashi-based sauce was comforting and bursting with umami flavours. Pity the egg wasn’t runny the way it should have been.

Kuroge Wagyu Donburi

Where: Booth 8, Azino Umebachi
Price: $10

Another humble and delicious donburi is the gyudon. Thin slices of fatty Kuroge Wagyu beef are simmered with onions in a mildly sweet sauce to give it just the right balance of sweet and savoury flavours.

Premium Mikawa Isshiki Grilled Eel Donburi

Where: Booth 9, Manma Ya
Price: $10

If the donburi championship were based on popularity, this would be the winner – we queued for almost an hour for our unadon. Manma Ya uses unagi from the famed Mikawa Isshiki region and while the eel came out nicely char-grilled, it was not plump and crisp the way we liked, and the rice was also a tad dry. It’s not worth the wait in our books, but if there’s no queue then go for it.

Echizen Kani Donburi (Crab Donburi)

Where: Booth 13, Zizakana-Motenashi Takinokawa
Price: $10

Don’t underestimate the simple presentation (or lack thereof) of this don. Every component from the fresh and sweet snow crab to the flavourful rice, which is laced with kani miso (crab innards), is good on its own. When mixed, the layers of rich umami flavours are intense and memorable leaving you wanting for more. If you have only stomach space (or carb quota) for one rice bowl, this is it.

Steak Donburi

Where: Booth 2, Kokorokogare
Price: $10

With slices of skirt steak served slightly pink with house-made Kujo green onion and black roasted shichimi (a seven-spice mix) sauce, this was the donburi we were most looking forward to eating. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. The meat, though thinly sliced, was dry and tough and even some of the fried garlic chips were burnt. This is more "don’t" than don.

Chichibu Waraji Pork Miso Donburi

Where: Booth 3, Find Chichibu
Price: $10

The most photogenic of the lot, the Pork Miso Donburi unfortunately did not live up to the hype in terms of taste. The fatty miso-stewed pork was too sweet and a tad dry, and the onsen egg was overcooked with a firm yolk. On the upside, the panko-crumbed cutlets were satisfyingly crispy, juicy and flavourful.
