Does Shake Shack’s Christmas Cookie Shake live up to its hype?

We find out if this fan favourite… “sleighs”.

Following in the footsteps of Shake Shack’s holiday tradition, the New York burger chain has launched its festive Christmas Cookie Shake ($7.80) in Singapore.

Those of you who are familiar with Shake Shack will know the Christmas Cookie Shake isn’t new. The festive drink was created five years ago and it’s the chain’s “most popular holiday shake every year, everywhere we sell it in the world”.

Inspired by sugar cookies that Shake Shack’s culinary director Mark Rosati’s mum used to make during the holidays, the seasonal milkshake consists of sugar cookie frozen custard piled high with whipped cream (“to resemble the ski slopes”) and finished with crumbled shortbread and red and green sprinkles. Think of it as a really thick and luscious cookie chunk-filled vanilla milkshake.

We know this sounds like something that will give you a sugar high, but fortunately, the shake isn’t overly sweet, thanks to the cream cheese that is added to balance the sweetness while giving it more body.

Some of our table companions who found the drink too rich could barely finish a third of it, but we’re suckers for vanilla shakes so this was right up our alley. We also like how the crushed-up buttery cookies added texture and flavour to the drink, but remember to give it a good stir as the cookie chunks tend to settle at the bottom and might be overwhelming towards the end.


So would we order this again? Definitely, but only if we’re in the area and there’s no queue. While we don’t think this shake quite compares to the Singapore-exclusive Pandan Shake, it is definitely worth a try. If you’re not a vanilla shake lover, you might want to share this with a friend as it could get jelak after a while.

And here’s a pro tip: bring your reusable bubble tea straw with you as it was difficult drinking the thick shake through a regular straw. We had to let it melt a little before drinking, but this resulted in the shake overflowing down the sides and causing a mess.

Alternatively, you could work your way down by dipping your fries in it. The crinkle-cut fries pair really well with the shake and the hot-cold, sweet-salty combo is addictive. We got a nod of approval from Mark when we were caught in the act.
