The expression “cheap and good” usually draws raised eyebrows from us, especially when we’re talking about stuff that goes on the face. But as this year’s ELLE Beauty It List shows, sometimes purchases that don’t completely blow a hole in your wallet (we wouldn’t go so far as to call some of these cheap) can be pretty awesome.
Ahead, five of the best new makeup treats under $50 to hit shelves in recent months.
1. Most volumising new mascara: Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara, $42
One coat makes your lashes look naturally full, while two to three coats can even make them look like falsies. According to ELLE senior beauty writer Lieu Wei Ning: “This is clump-free and the brush is great for small Asian eyes.”
2. Best pro-effect brow kit: Clio Kill Brow Conte Powder Kit, $25.90
This compact kit has a powder to fill sparse areas and a wax to define and keep hairs in place, plus all the applicators you need.
3. Sheerest new lip tint: Innisfree Vivid Tint Rouge, $16
Despite how vibrant these shades look, they melt onto lips to give a delicate, sheer wash of colour.
4. Best complexion enhancer: IDS Diamond Dust Perfector, $43.50
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend indeed. This makes skin look perfect with subtle radiance, thanks to real diamond particles.
5. Most innovative eyeshadow: Laneige Two Tone Shadow Bar, $38
Two complementary shades, side by side, in this handy little eyeshadow bar. Swipe directly onto lids, blend and you’re all set. “This makes eyeshadow application a breeze!” says ELLE senior beauty writer Melissa Chew.
