Not all jeans are created equal. You wouldn’t wear ripped jeans on your first day at a new job, would you? Nor would you wear your thickest, most durable pair just to sit back and watch a movie. So how do you choose? With a little common sense and direction, navigating a store’s denim section can be as easy as making a beeline at the candy store for your favourite sweets.
UNIQLO in particular, has made strides in developing jeans so that they accommodate every need and body types, be it a need to stay warm, a need to cool off, or a need to wear fitting, skinny jeans without suffocating. Jeans are so commonplace that they can start to feel a little mundane – but think about it, is there any other item of clothing we wear more frequently, aside from our underwear?
Whether you realise it or not, jeans really have made life better for our generation. Can you imagine going about your day in stuffy suits and stiff dresses, the way our grandparents did 50 years ago? Didn’t think so. And at the same time, UNIQLO has reinvented jeans and in the process made them much more versatile than before.

1. A hot date
Contrary to our parents’ old-timey wisdom, women CAN wear jeans on a date – especially if that date takes place in the zoo, in a bowling alley, or in an amusement park. But that doesn’t mean you should show up looking like a bum. Something that fits well, is in a dark wash, and does not have holes can make a lasting impression even more effectively than a little black dress.
TRY: Women’s Smart Shape Jeans from UNIQLO (pictured on the right). This new product nips, tucks, and disguises your problem areas to achieve a body-contouring effect. The Smart Shape band inside the front pockets keeps your tummy in tow and reshapes your waistline, while the specially-designed fabric creates a slimming effect on your legs without cutting off your circulation. How does it work? The denim fabric is crafted with an ecological fiber of plant origin called lyocell, which blends with denim to create a fabric that is stretchy and soft – perfect for dates that last from morning to night.
Men’s Slim Fit Straight Jeans (Selvedge) (pictured on the left): These classic jeans combine stretchiness with an authentic denim texture that gets even better with wear. Rolling the cuffs reveals the signature "red ear" accents unique to selvedge denim. Your date will be impressed!

2. Family day out
Running in jeans sounds daunting enough without factoring in the possibility that you’re running after your own children. And forget donning your favourite cotton palazzo pants – everyone who’s ever had to look after little kids knows that they’ll rip or get stained faster than you can say, “GET BACK IN YOUR ROOM!”
TRY: You’ll want to go durable and comfy here, so we recommend the refreshed Women’s Ultra Stretch Jeans from UNIQLO (pictured above), which are now even more stretchable than their 2014 counterparts. An updated cut also elongates your legs! Fun fact: the back pockets on these jeans are specially designed to enhance the shape of your butt too. If you’re looking for something a little roomier, try UNIQLO’s Women’s Denim Slouch Jeans, which have a looser waist. A blend of denim and modal makes for fabric that is lightweight and has a chic, slightly lived-in appearance.

3. Beat the heat
It’s tempting to forgo jeans here in Singapore, thanks to the weather, but why give up such an essential fashion item without trying some of the lighter options? We’ve come a long way since the invention of denim in 1870, meaning that denim today can cater to all kinds of climates – even climates as sticky as ours!
TRY: UNIQLO’s Men’s Skinny Fit Tapered Jeans (Air) (pictured above), which uses special hollow-core yarn to create jeans that are 20% lighter, but just as sturdy as regular denim. It is able to stretch and expand by more than 15%, ensuring maximum mobility and comfort as you run errands all day in the sun.
