What the stars ate this week

With Chinese New Year just around the corner, this week we saw celebs gearing up for the festivities with plenty of yu sheng shared between friends (Zoe Tay, Pan Ling Ling, Aileen Tan, and co.) and family (the Lee's). As the Muttons helped themselves to themed lo hei burgers, Felicia Chin indulged in fried chicken, expressing rather convincingly that reunion dinners could be simplified with fast food takeout. Others, like Rui En, readied for the new year by visiting and handing out food to the elderly -- a heartwarming way to celebrate her birthday.

What she ate: Baller yusheng with friends including Zoe Tay, Aileen Tan, and Pan Ling Ling

Yummy factor: The abalone and bird's nest yuan bao take centrestage here, with pomegranate adding a good balance of sweet and tart. Looks like a befitting platter for this bunch!

What they ate: A sumptuous Chinese New year takeaway package from Crystal Jade

Yummy factor: We spy big fat prawns, abalone, chicken, glutinous rice and yu sheng among this feast. It's pretty legit for a reunion dinner that comes out of takeaway boxes, although supplementing it with something authentically homemade would be nicer.

Pornsak

What he ate: $800 bak kwa. It's so exclusive that orders are by invitation only.

Yummy factor: What exactly did they put in this bak kwa for it to be worth $800? We'll take the cash in a nifty ang bao instead, please.

Rui En

What she ate: Her birthday cake

Yummy factor: What a sweet yellow cake to match her sunflower bouquet. Rui En volunteered with her fan club, RBKD, on her special day, where she took part in spring cleaning and packing and distributing food to the elderly. Sounds like a birthday well spent indeed.

What he ate: Super spicy fried chicken from Neh Neh Chicken

Yummy factor: Nice try, Joshua, He braved one bite before chomping on a fry to alleviate his burning tongue. Uh...A for effort?

Jae Liew

What she ate: In Seoul, Jae Liew had carnitas quesadillas from Frito Tex-Mex near Hoegi Station, a pastry at Namdaemun Market, and yuja tea at Cafe Alocasia

Yummy factor: Mexican food in Seoul isn't what we'd expect you to write home about, but Jae couldn't rave enough about the amazing quesadillas from Frito Tex-Mex (a place that was "nothing like a typical restaurant" as she felt like she was "having a meal inside someone's actual home"), our curiosity is peaked. Sounds like it's an intimate setting with a hidden gem factor with straight-up good food.

What they ate: Hong Pow Burger from Fat Boys and Fat Papas

Yummy factor: Kong pow beef with lo hei sandwiched between red beetroot buns sounds experimental. The pineapple would add an interesting layer of flavour, but where's the green lettuce in the close-up?

What she ate: KFC parmesan truffle chicken

Yummy factor: In this sponspored post for KFC, Felicia wrote about missing both her grandmothers' cooking this New Year, but added that there is an upside to going the "untraditional route" as well, by ordering fast food to really chill and hang out with family. TBH, not sure all old-school relatives would let this idea fly... But this chicken looks so crispy we're expecting shards of batter to rain down.

What she ate: Bak kwa from Bee Cheng Hiang

Yummy factor: Looking at that bit of charred corner is making our bak kwa craving all the stronger. Imagine having a whole bag of glistening barbequed pork sheets to yourself.

Tanya Chua

What she ate: Her birthday cake and a fancy cheese board

Yummy factor: That question mark candle is one of the best inventions around. But Tanya isn't one to skirt around her age, hashtagging "44 and loved."

Jacelyn Tay

What she ate: Laksa

Yummy factor: "I do not put on weight regardless of how much I eat," Jacelyn jokingly bragged as she slurped up her laksa gravy, before adding on her Instagram post that this was a cheat day and that she eats clean 95 percent of the time. From the looks of that gravy, this is one laksa worth getting fat for.

What she ate: Steak that her husband cooked

Yummy factor: While eating this restaurant-grade steak, Stefanie asked her son, "How about mummy try cooking it next time too?" He responded by looking straight at the ceiling, before replying that she might need to use a recipe, implying that she's a novice. Well her husband did set the bar high...

Jean Danker

What she ate: Lunch at Nipong Naepong, which serves fusion renditions of Chinese-Korean jjamppong.

Yummy factor: Jean's favourite was the Spicy Keu Risotto, and she also ordered takeaway sweet potato and garlic pizzas after this huge meal. Apparently you're supposed to roll the pizzas and dip them into whipped cream. Count us intrigued.

Zoe Tay

What she ate: Her birthday cake during a merry celebration with friends including Pan Ling Ling and Aileen Tan

Yummy factor: Aw, there's no such thing as too many birthday celebrations for the queen. How cute is Zoe holding up her cake even in the group photo? That's a healthy ratio of berries-to-cake, we might add.

Sonia Chew

What she ate: Breakfast in bed at W Singapore Sentosa Cove

Yummy factor: "Clearly the only time I can multitask is when skincare and food are involved!!" Sonia captioned. Except we're not buying it. Anyone who has used a face mask would know it's impossible (or extremely difficult) to open your mouth wide enough to eat without wrinkling and ruining your air pocket-less mask application.

Yasminne Cheng

What she ate: Nasi biryani lunch at The Residence Maldives

Yummy factor: The beauty of nasi biryani is that it tastes just as good on da bao paper as it does from fancy plateware -- although we'll give a nod to the ocean view and generous cashews.

What he ate: Strawberry shortcake from Boufé Boutique Café for his girlfriend Nicole Chang Min's birthday

Yummy factor: "She was laughing at me when I turned 27 years old, and she just turned 27 last week. HAHAHA," James Seah captioned. What is this subtle ageism going on? Guys please, one is never too old to eat strawberry shortcake and make duck faces.

Sharon Au

Sharon Au

What she ate: Sharon enjoyed heart-shaped bak kwa all the way in Paris, noting that this is her 18th year as the face of Fragrance bak kwa

Yummy factor: Yummy bak kwa aside, we had to chuckle at Sharon's bestie Michelle Chong's shade-throwing comments: "Is it the table not high enough to capture the bak kwa AND the Eiffel Tower at the same tum so must use thick book to prop it up?" and "Hi Sharon is this the condo at Jurong? Can see the lighthouse from Jurong Island. Nice view!"

What he ate: Salad aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise

Yummy factor: Okay we've seen better salads than this, but it's all a part of Nick's "3 tips for eating healthy on a cruise ship," which are as follows: "Eat a big salad every day. Ask for steamed vegetabels instead of sautéed. Choose healthy (or healthy-ish) desserts with fresh fruits." Notice how "Instagrammable" food is nowhere in this criteria, heh.

He Ying Ying

What she ate: Bobo's mala chicken cheese ball, mala fried fish ball, and mala cheese tofu

Yummy factor: Yum. Guess mala is the theme for Ying Ying's reunion dinner. Now all she needs is plenty of fresh greens to balance the prepackaged goodies.
