Feasting like a chi-chi gourmand doesn’t come cheap, obviously. But wise epicureans know that lunching at a fine-diner is a thing of beauty — it costs a fraction of a typical dinner bill at the same establishment. Case in point: Joël Robuchon Restaurant’s Weekend Set Lunch.
It offers three menus for various appetites: three courses for $78, four for $98, and five for $118. (Dinner here will set you back over $400 per person). And what’s lovely is that you can build your own lunch from a rather comprehensive list of dishes. While the appetisers and main courses were competently prepared, what we appreciated most during our tasting were the swanky frills.
Like the divine basket of assorted, freshly baked bread that puts most brand name bakeries here to shame. Gorge on the excellent chewy-crusty mini baguette, Parmesan cheese bun, and exceedingly creamy hand-churned unsalted Maison Le Ponclet butter, which you season with French sea salt and fruity Espelette pepper served on the side.
Next, you get what’s possibly the most luxurious amuse-bouche ever — Imperial caviar, crab meat and lobster jelly — presented in a caviar tin (pictured above). It tastes exactly like it sounds: dreamy. We opted for four courses and particularly enjoyed our appetiser of Salmon Tartare with Crispy Waffles and the main course of Grilled Wagyu with Vegetable Fricassee and Fresh Morels. Sir, Madame, luncheon is served.
