SINGAPORE: Singapore theatre director Ivan Heng and his husband Tony Trickett have been invited to a banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.
The state banquet will be held on Tuesday at Buckingham Palace in honour of President Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife who are on a state visit to London.
In a post on his Facebook page on Sunday, Heng, 50, said he received the invitation 12 days after he and his partner of 18 years tied the knot at the Chelsea Old Town Hall in London on August 1. The pair wed in England after it passed a law recognising same-sex marriages in 2013.
“This is a historic event, marking the first time that Singapore has been accorded this most singular honour. Hosted by the Queen, the State Banquet celebrates the longstanding friendship between the United Kingdom and Singapore,” wrote the artistic director of home-grown theatre company W!ld Rice.
“My husband and I are very moved and deeply honoured to attend. We do so as proud representatives of Singapore and members of the Singapore arts community.”
