People were left stuck in the cars on New Year's Eve (31.12.19) after being trapped by 30-foot high tumbleweeds.
Towering piles of tumbleweed built up on a Washington highway, forcing the state's transport department to deploy snowploughs to clear the weeds.
Washington state patrol said that four cars and an 18-wheeler truck had been recovered, while a fifth car - which had been driven into a ditch - was saved the following morning.
Trooper Chris Thorson said: "People were still stuck at midnight and rung in the new year trapped under the weeds."
He said that cars could easily become stuck when tumbleweeds sweep across roads as drivers "slow down due to low visibility on the roadway, then eventually stop. Then you get covered in tumbleweeds because of high winds nearing 50mph."
