See the mysterious sand dunes of Gurun Pasir Busung

Discover a stretch of desert in the middle of a rainforest and beach in Bintan. Formerly a quarry, it is now transformed into spectacular sand dunes and the area mimics the majestic landscape of the Arabian nights. Situated at the side of Jalan Raya Busung, the spot hasn’t undergone any significant tourism development, and remains rustic and charming. But this also means that getting there can be a hassle as there’s no public transportation to the attraction.

Catch a glimpse of the Sea Gypsies’ life

Go beyond the popular attractions and activities on the island and witness the lives of the Sea Gypsies. The nomadic people stay in homes that are built on stilts over the waters or in boats. Visiting this village is a heart warming and eye-opening experience especially when the children around bask in smiles and thoroughly enjoy your company. This will definitely give you some valuable takeways on the simpicity of life and discover a different side to Bintan.

Discover the brick igloos of Rumah Arang

We’re all familiar with ice igloos but what about brick igloos? These dome-shaped huts used to be the furnaces for inhabitants of the island but have since become obsolete after the traditional way of burning mangrove to make charcoal was prohibited. But good news is, they are now a tourist attraction and make a 'gram-worthy backdrop for your photos.

Visit the 500 Lohan Temple

Whether you are religious or not, the 500 Lohan Temple is a magnificent attraction to visit. There are about 500 life-sized Lohan statues neatly lined up in rows in the temple backyard and no two are the same - they are dressed in different robes and have different poses and expressions.

Hike up Gunung Bintan

For the adventurous, we highly recommend you take a hike up Gunung Bintan. Soak in the beauty of nature as you trek through the dense rainforest on your way up, and at the 340-metre high summit, you will be treated to panoramic views of the island.

On your way down, take a dip in the pool at the base of the waterfall. It's a refreshing way to cool down and a great way to reward yourself after an exhausting trek. It's no walk in the park as some areas are pretty steep, but it offers an insight into Bintan's natural beauty.

Be in awe of the surreal lake at Danau Biru

Danau Biru (the blue lagoon) is undoubtedly one of the most surreal and mesmerising locales in Bintan. Surrounded by white sand dunes, this lake, a result of mining activity in the area, will take your breath away. It's not (yet) infested by tourists so you can expect a peaceful time here but be sure to pack your own food if you intend to hang around for long as there are no restaurants or stores in the area.

Watch the turtles hatch at Lagoi beach

If you happen to be visiting in mid-May to end of June or August to September, be sure to head to Lagoi Beach to catch some turtle-hatching action. Take part in the release of the sea turtles, or simply just watching them hatch and wriggling their way to the salty waters will be an eye-opening experience for the kids.
