Eat your way through Melaka

There are many good reasons why Melaka is popular among Singaporean visitors. It is easy to reach, it has a pretty laidback atmosphere, and things are pretty affordable. However, the one thing that continues to be outstanding is its food. Apart from delicious Malay, Chinese and Indian food, Melaka also has Portuguese and Peranakan culinary influences that are pretty unique to the state.

You probably already know all about Melaka’s best dishes and restaurants, but discovering where to buy the best snacks to bring back home is just as important. Here’s our recommended list of where to go.

Pineapple Tarts at Bee Bee

Melaka-made pineapple tarts are slightly different from our local varieties – they’re much more crumbly, savoury and crusty. The saltiness of the crust perfectly balances out the sweet pineapple puree. One place you can find this is in a humble shophouse in Ujong Pasir called Bee Bee.

Nancy’s Kitchen is actually a famous Peranakan restaurant that’s perpetually packed with diners. It also has a section selling a large variety of cookies, kuih and other traditional Peranakan snacks. One of their bestsellers is the Peranakan or Nyonya Chang. Rather than braised pork, beans and mushrooms, the Nyonya Chang has slightly sweetened minced pork and the glutinous rice is coloured blue from the natural dye of the Telang flower. Apart from the Nyonya Chang, this restaurant also has the regular Bak Chang and Kee Chang.
