Suzy

The former Miss A member was bestowed the title “the nation’s first love” for her innocent and candid charm but Suzy was not always well-loved by K-pop fans. Criticised for her weight in her debut drama, 2011’s Dream High, Suzy went on a diet and achieved noticeable results.

Her "time limit" diet consists of a slice of chicken breast, sweet potato and a glass of low-fat milk for breakfast. By starting the day with a hearty breakfast, Suzy ensures she has sufficient energy and nutrients to get her through the day. For lunch, it's a bowl of brown rice and salad, and to prevent bloating the next day, she just has two sweet potatoes for dinner.

Try this: If you’re bored eating the same thing every day, switch up the chicken for salmon, which consists of plenty of lean protein and heart-healthy omega 3, keeping you full for longer. Like Suzy, avoid eating after 6pm as the body is more likely to store those calories as fats rather than convert them into energy.

BigBang’s T.O.P

One look at T.O.P and you’d never guess that he was once an overweight teenager. The 1.8-metre tall rapper who weighs just 65kg, revealed he went on a red bean diet to shed the pounds and also relied on unsweetened jelly and water to lose 19kg in a month.

Try this: While we don’t recommend anyone to follow suit, beans, which are packed with protein and fibre, have properties that trigger slimming reactions similar to ones you get on a low-carb diet plan.

Instead of a bean-only diet, consume about 100g of cooked or boiled beans with vegetables and meat or fish for each meal. Some of the best beans for weight loss are green beans, mung beans, black beans and kidney beans.

Like Suzy, her Dream High co-star IU’s weight transformation through the years was equally drastic. Fat-shamed during her early days in showbiz, IU was motivated to lose weight fast, especially before a performance or photoshoot. In addition to exercise, she would have just one apple for breakfast, sweet potatoes for lunch and a protein drink for dinner.

Try this: "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper" – this should be an important mantra during your weight loss journey. Instead of an apple, start your day with a green smoothie bowl consisting of organic almond milk, spinach, avocado and organic flax seeds. This stimulates metabolism, preventing you from overindulging later in the day.

For lunch, complement your sweet potato with baked almonds or walnuts, and end your day with a bowl of protein-rich salad.

Changmin

To get himself in tip-top shape, former 2AM vocalist Changmin, who weighed 100kg before his debut, put himself on a rigorous diet. His breakfast consisted of a sweet potato, egg whites, washed down with a glass of low-fat milk. For lunch, it was chicken breast, with a sweet potato and dressing-free vegetable salad, before ending the day with either chicken breast again or seven egg whites. His protein-rich diet plan complemented his workout routine so he could bulk up more effectively.

Try this: We think Changmin's diet is pretty wholesome and nutritious, however, if you can’t see yourself eating eggs and sweet potatoes all day, spice up your lunch menu with either a grilled chicken breast or tuna sandwich with wholemeal bread. As for dinner, make an avocado egg salad as a substitute to plain eggs.

HyunA

Famous for her curves and sultry vibes, former 4Minute member HyunA is undoubtedly one of Korea’s sexiest idols. However, at a point in her career, HyunA was mocked as a ‘dumpling’ after she appeared bloated and plump on television. Thereafter, the singer went on a strict diet and cut out all flour-based food to achieve a slender figure.

While HyunA did not reveal the exact foods she consumed for each meal, she gave many useful dieting tips you can adopt. One of them involves consuming many small meals instead of three big meals to keep your metabolism humming and prevent overeating.

HyunA’s no-flour diet may be tough to commit to in Singapore but with some tweaking, you won’t even realise the lack of flour in your meals.

Replace bread and pasta with organic white quinoa or cauliflower rice, both of which are rich in fibre and antioxidants, or buckwheat noodles. Meanwhile, reward yourself with occasional cheat days by incorporating small portions of brown rice into your meal.
