No pain, no gain

With Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day done and dusted, it’s time to get serious and jump back on the workout wagon to make your bak kwa belly disappear. And who better to get some hardcore fitspo than these hard-bodied celebs?

Not everyone is blessed with skinny genes (yes, you @jadeseah and @sheilasim). Some of us have to clock in hours of dizzying sessions at the gym to achieve ripped bods. From grueling HIIT sessions to long-distance runs, this fit bunch show us what it takes to look like a star!

Desmond Tan

He may look lean and lanky, but underneath those oversized shirts, Desmond Tan has well-defined biceps and a ripped torso. Even though he doesn’t always post himself working out, he does exercise three to five times a week, doing cardio and weights at the gym, or swims laps in the pool. If he needs to get into tip-top shape (like for his sexy serial killer role in Code of Law and Derek), he includes HIIT into the mix.

In between hosting gigs, photo-calls and her on-air show, 987 DJ Sonia Chew still finds the time to work out with her personal trainer and even clocks-in runs and HIIT workouts, whenever possible. She’s got amazing time management! A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do to maintain her taut bod, right?

Hong Ling

This actress looks like she’s born bikini-ready but Hong Ling shows us that it takes a lot of sweat and tears to look this picture perfect. She does everything from back-breaking gym sessions with weights and kettle bells to callisthenic and HIIT workouts at the stadium with boyfriend, Nick Teo. We unofficially crown them Fitness Couple of the Year!

Jade Seah

This TV personality and fitness fanatic works out more than the average person for the sheer love of it. “I believe in doing a variety of things to stay fit and keep the workouts enjoyable so I don't get bored with the routine and I actually look forward to them. On top of functional and core training at the gym, netball, in-line skating and trampoline sessions are just some of the workouts I enjoy,” she says on Instagram. Even on holiday, you’ll find Jade Seah her trekking up a mountain or two and snowboarding!

However, due to all the high-impact activity, she’s now suffering from plantar faciitis, which has forced her to pick up low impact activities like TRX which she’s not fond of (because, weak upper body).

Andie Chen

Fraught with an auto-immune disease, where his skin breaks out in rashes, Andie Chen felt the need to rethink his lifestyle. And the first thing he did was to embark on a fitness journey and diet change. Rules are simple: “Hard workouts for at least 2 hours daily, 6 times a week, 1 day of active recovery (meaning stretching, yoga or light runs) a week, 4 big meals a day and 8 hours of sleep daily.”

For the past six months, Andie trained like an action hero – weights, yoga, cardio, and fight techniques – and now sports larger biceps, broader shoulders and rock-hard abs to boot! “I'm only fully fulfilled when I am covered in sweat and have nothing more left in me,” he said on Instagram.

Allan Wu

This single father of two used to enjoy pushing the limits of his endurance levels with high impact workouts like running, basketball and tennis, and signing up for races like Spartan. But these days he’s starting to appreciate less strenuous forms exercise like swimming. "Strength isn't about how much you can handle before you break. It's about how much you can handle after you break. Find your breaking point so you can lay the foundation for your breakthrough!” he wrote on Instagram.

Benjamin Kheng

When you’re perpetually surrounded by beautiful women (namely band members, Sandra Riley Tang and Narelle Kheng of The Sam Willows), there’s a certain pressure to look just as good all the time. Lucky for Benjamin Kheng, fitness is in his blood. The former national swimmer, who has a self-professed love-hate relationship with exercise, tries to alternate between swimming, Muay Thai at Evolve, and general circuit training. “All three employ different muscle groups, so it's a challenge to get used to. But at least it's never boring,” he said.
